View Full Version : Horizontal Red Lines when using Component on my DELL 2405FPW

Just wanted to ask if anyone knew about these horizontal red lines I'm seeing when I use the component input on my Dell monitor. They showed up when I used my XBox, and now they are back with my XBOX 360. They are quite annoying, and if possible, I'd like to get rid of them. Does anyone have information relevant to this? Thanks!

You don't have a picture do you?

Have you tried different component cables?

have you tried the MIDDLE button on the monitor.

MAIN MENU > IMAGE SETTINGS > "SCALING"

If the XBOX(360) maximum output is 1920x1080, and your monitor is 1920x1200, then you have 120 horizontal pixels unaccounted for. With scaling off, the monitor does not use the space, and that is why you see the lines.

grrrr...ummm...you all are misunderstanding. I guess I didn't describe it very well. Let me take a picture of it so you can see what I'm talking about. Sorry about the poor description.

god I'm an idiot. Sorry, I just read what I wrote, and it REALLY doesn't describe the problem properly.

Ok, I get the picture, and it is clear, and crisp, but all through the picture are these faint horizontal red lines. And they move upwards, or downwards, like they are scrolling.

I'm still going to try and take a picture. I'll be back in a little while with a pic.

ok, i see the word RED in your first post. I overlooked that. Are the lines going across the entire monitor from left to right? Does it do it with a different input? (VGA,DVI, Component). The problem might be with the monitor itself. The fact that your original xbox exhibited the same behavior, only supports that claim. Test it with other devices and see if it does the same.

definitely sounds like a bad monitor to me. I'm happy for you that it only happens when the component input is used, at least there's a bright side. But I have to believe something is fubar with the circuit board that handles that input.

That's what worries me, it would be a lot of trouble to get dell to replace my monitor.

The lines run left to right, but they move up and down. They do not show up on the DVI or VGA input. And I don't think they show up on the composite input.

UPDATE!

The lines are various colors, I just remember red the most (probably because when they are red they stick out the most). Anyway, they are different colors at different times. Here is a picture of them now. Sorry about the mis-information.

These are as faint as the lines get, they do get worse, but when I went to take the shot they didn't want to show up as well. But even when they appear as they do in the picture, it can still be VERY annoying.

I think its a problem with the refresh rate or some garbage like that. Effects tons of the dell monitors. Your not the only one. It was happening when I used my DVI plug on my 2005 fpw until I got powerstrip and upped the horizontal refresh rate (geometry or whatever it is) slightly above 60. Since you can't tweak the xbox's refresh rate you may be sol. If there is a vga adapter you might want to try that.

actually I believe there is a VGA adapter for the 360. That would be your best workaround.

This might seem like a stupid question, but, you tried different component cables?

Well I'm actually using VGA, but stupid microsoft crippled the output resolution to 1360 x 768, which is complete crap. The only way I can get 1920 x 1080 resolution is with the component cable.

no, I haven't tried any other component cables, and it doesn't seam like a stupid question. I have only used official Xbox component cables, mainly because they are cheaper then the rip-off (but good quality) monster cables. This is off topic, but I hate monster-cables with a passion because they rip people off more then any other company that I know of. And there are some companies out there that really rip people off.

Figured out what the problem is...sort of.

It's my house, and or monitor location. I took my monitor in with me to work Thursday and the lines were nowhere to be seen. Which means it could be a few things.

Noise on the power line
interference from a device nearby (what I don't know though...)
the little people that live in my closet...
My sister
the Doorway
the carpet on my floor
or even my cloths

I just dunno, but my best bet is the noise on the power line, with the doorway coming in a close second. :p

Have you tried it in a different location in your house?

No, not yet, I may move it into the living room and hook it up there, but I have to take my xbox with me, and everything, and I don't feel like moving all that crap around just yet. I'll will have to try it eventually though.

hah, yeah I guess, but hopefully it is just noise on the power line because that would be much easier to fix. At least I think it would be.

Actually that can be hard to fix. A UPS might do the trick though.

yeah, that's what I was thinking, just buying a power line filter, or a UPS. That's why I thought it might be fairly easy to fix.
