what are the odds of getting a faulty lcd right out of the box?

is this a hypothetical question or didn't happen to you? I would think it is very unlikely. If it did happen where did you get it from and what model?

It's unlikely, but if it's defective when you get it, just send it back immediately.

The odds of getting an LCD that is completely dead or suffering from major defects is very small *UNLESS* it's damaged during shipping. But if it's been that badly mishandled the box would give it away. i.e. if it looks like the truck ran over the box, refuse the package. Generally speaking, companies have sufficient quality control to prevent them from shipping bad screens out the door.

That said, it's somewhat common to get an LCD that has a dead pixel or two. I'm typing this on an NEC 15" LCD that arrived with two dead pixels (one in the lower left, one near the center of the screen). The others panels my employer purchased, all of which are identical and arrived at the same time, are flawless. So it happens but it's not like most, or even half of LCDs have dead pixels. And as the manufacturing process continues to improve it happens less and less frequently.

with the tech changes in LCD in the last 2 years I wouldn't spend anything significant on 2 year old tech. Fact is you can get some pretty schweet deals on 19" now and they are new tech.
