First of all I dont know if this topic comes up very often. Over the past few months I have been listening to people talking, reading magazines and looking at monitor specs. It has come to my attention that TFT monitors only display about 16million colours. Now heres the thing....does the contrast ratio, say for example 600:1 make up for the lost colour depth where a CRT monitor would display some 32million colours? Or does the brightness of the screen make up for it? Or something else? I'm completely confused as to why a 16million colour depth of most TFT monitors would be better than something (CRT monitor that is) with 2X the colour depth? Can anyone explain this to me please.... Thanks

*Edit*

So which type of monitor is better TFT or CRT? And which would you buy if you needed a new monitor?

depends on a number of factors: what you want from a monitor (ie space restrictions, visual clarity, gaming, etc).
CRT monitors are large, inexpensive (compared to there counterpart lcd) and usually have very high quality images: good for gaming.

LCD monitors take up a lot less room, look really nice, and in order to get a really good visual quality, you would need to spend a lot of $. A lot of LCDs have ghosting probs in games, so you have to determine what uses you will have.

I agree with the above. Which type of monitor is "better" depends on what it's going to be used for, the needs of the user and personal preference. Two differences to consider are that LCDs use less energy to run than CRTs, and LCDs are easier on the eyes in most people's opinion.
