Are those trinitron monitors you have? They have that because they use an aperture grill, instead of a shadow mask. It is of better quality...sony came up with it... you get used to the lines. BY the way there are two if you haven't noticed.
here is a linky: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question406.htm
Wow, I've owned several trinitron monitors and never noticed. Good to know......

There are 2 lines in my 22" NEC...I never notice them unless looking at a stark white background.

I do sometimes, but I've gotten so used to them, it is like they aren't even there :)

Trinitron is supposedly better quality, I don't notice any better quality, but I do notice the two grey lines.
Screw Trinitron.
But yes, it are normal.

Play the right musical tones to get those two wires shaking and it does interesting things to your display (temporary). Singing baritone will make the screen go nuts.

Whoa! I remember that happening and I would FREAK out.
I sing a lot when nobody's around and my monitor started waving and stuff, it was crazy.
Haha, Trinitrons are fun.

I should try playing a baritone in front of mine, that would be interesting heh.
I have 2 Trinitron monitors in a dual display setup and both have them, but I got used to them and they don't bother me. Although my secondary monitor was a freebie which got dropped and one the virtical wires has snapped or something so I also have 1 vertical line which is bent, its not straight, kinda curved.... not a lot, I'd say in the center of the sreen its maybe over an inch from where it is on the edges, but like the others, you get used to it and really only notice it on a white background. I can live with it for a free 17" monitor :p
woah!
ive got those lines, 2 of them, on an old old 17" flatscreen crt... looks like its a DELL monitor, my dad got it as a display. i always figured it was damaged, and they lines werent too annoying.
heh, its getting ready to die. bout 5 years old, maybe 6.

supposedly the trinitron design is supposed to cutdown on glare because it is vertically flat, i never noticed a difference. i have an old 15" vaio monitor that i won't let die, it's going on eight years old and the screen is starting to get blurry (along with a badly pinched cable that makes the screen purple, blown speakers, blown subwoofer, and one corner is blurry). i just can't seem to part with it.

Why can't you part with it lol?
I never notice any glares..and if I do a monitor isn't going to stop the glare. Sounds like someone needs an upgrade ;).

lol, it has some nostaligic meaning to me... along with my sony vaio it was the first monitor i bought with my own money. the vaio is still going strong too. i do need to get rid of the monitor though, i have a couple of viewsonic 17" crts for my other computers and i'm using a 19" xerox lcd on my main system. the sony monitor is just collecting dust.
i'm going to be VERY sad when the vaio tower finally dies (whenever that happens to be).
