which one is better? are they both pretty much the same monitor, just the 2005 is stretched a bit, or does one have better image quality than the other? i'd like widescreen to be able to keep a lot of windows open side by side, but i'm worried that some games won't support widescreen. anybody have any advice? they're pretty much the same price as i'll pick one up as soon as they hit ~$450 (right now the 2001fp is $486)..

thanks

i have the same question..

I recall seeing some reviews saying that the 2001fp is less suited to gaming than the 2005fpw. That would make sense though seeing as how lower response panels have just come out in the last 2 years and the 2001fp is a few years older than the 2005fpw. The 2001fp has more overall screen size but the increased horizontal view in games is a major plus for the 2005fpw. BTW there are ways of getting games to run in widescreen even if they don't support it. http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=32
I'll be getting the 2005fpw whenever a 35% coupon shows up again. It should match vertically with my current 17" Samsung lcd for a nice dual screen setup.

I'd take the 2005 over the 2001 any day (and I did.) You can see/do much more with a widescreen monitor IMHO. As you said you have more horizontal space for windows and applications. You also physically see more in games, as you have a wider view. I've gotten all my games to run widescreen. Most have native support, others just require a config file to be changed. (NFSU2 was the worst, had to d/l a hack for it) If you watch movies or videos, you also don't have a letterbox like you do with a normal monitor, it will take up the whole screen.

You might also check out Gateway's new competitor to the 2005fpw, I foget the model number but it's suppose to be a 21" widescreen with a little better specs.

the 2001 has more pixels, but widescreen is usualy better since most people need more horizontal viewing area...in which WS is better. Widescreen gaming is also better IMO.

I would get the 2005 though because widescreen offers more horizontal and natural (16:10 is a much moire natural viewing area for your eyes than 4:3) viewing area.

i just checked and i can get a 2001fp for $430 shipped. the 2005 cant touch that for now. will the 2005 get any major coupons any time soon?

the 2005fpw can be had for around $450 with coupons which are pretty common

if you want the 2001fp just as much then go ahead and get it, but the 2005fpw will be able to come close to that price

Serraph
10-29-05, 11:27 AM
The 2005fpw is actually cheaper when both have coupons available. With the 35% coupon and $60 off $500 purchase it came out to around $397 shipped. The base price for the 2001fp is $50 more than the 2005fpw.

jnev_89
10-29-05, 12:15 PM
well right now there is no 35% off coupon for the 2005, only for the 2001. the $60 off coupon ends today. i would also probably prefer the 2005, so i'll wait until the coupons become available.

I have seen the two side by side and didnt like the wide screen version as much. I bought the 2001 and love it. I play games on it all the time and it works great.

If you play online poker, the 2001fp can fit four Party Poker tables up at once, the 2005 can't. ;)

Main reason I'm on the 2001fp :)

You may just have to play the waiting game. They just ran the 2005fpw coupons last month, so it may be a while before you can get one for less than $400.

A year is divided into 4 financial quarters, Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, so 12 months/4=3 months, so every 3 months or so is a quarter. So by the end of the year, it'll be the end of Q4 (4th quarter). And most manufactors usually have their sales near the end of the quarters to liquify their supplies and stuff.

damnit! well, if i'm gonna get a new monitor i need to get one within the next week probably. my dad bought a 19" lcd for himself, but he said that he'll return it and buy my 17" for $200 if i want to.

are there any other choices besides for the dells? i'd like high-res, if 4:3 then uxga, if wide-screen than wsxga res. is there anything else like that going for ~$500?

hows this one by viewsonic for $450?

Gateway FPD2185W... I think its about 150-200 more than the 2005fp... supposed to be nice though

jnev_89
10-30-05, 02:48 PM
i just checked it out, it does look really nice, but it's $600, a bit more than i wanted to spend. i really don't need pip, so it kinda seems like a waste...

what about that viewsonic? it's only $450 and has pretty good reviews...

not to be rude, but as i've already said eariler in the thread, since the 2005 isn'g gonna be having any major coupons any time soon, i won't be getting it.

i'm getting it brand new and the seller says that i get the full warrenty. here's the link to the auction.

i have one question though. what's the responce time on the monitor? the guy i bought it from says that it's 12ms, i read in a different auction that it was 20ms. which one is correct?

thanks

EDIT
WOOT 6 stars!!!

voodoomelon
10-31-05, 08:35 AM
Neither is correct, lol.

The official response time of the 2005fpw is 16ms.

The grey to grey response time is 12ms, but no-one cares about that.

jnev_89
10-31-05, 09:06 AM
that's also fine. i don't game a lot so 16ms is fine. i was hoping that it wasn't 20ms though.

how about this then. from dell.com(US site) the full price for the 2005fpw is $699.99. This converts to uk £ at £395.50. yet dell uk sell this monitor at £507.50. lol. just goes to show that you lot get it cheaper over there!!! maybe it would be cheaper for me to buy a US model and get it shipped. lol. alot of you can get it for $450.00? 254.497 GBP...... :bang head   i wish

I've got a quick question. When someone says some games don't support widescreen, does that mean the game doesn't display correctly or it just doesn't fully utilize the widescreen?

Scott9027
11-04-05, 09:43 PM
Can't any game support widescreen as long as you edit the configuration file?

jnev_89
11-04-05, 11:52 PM
i just playde battlefield 2, the res was 1024x768 and the picture was stretched across the screen (didn't look stretched though). i'll google how to set wide-screen res as there was no option in the menu. with my old 17" lcd my 6600gt was more or less fine for gaming, with this beast i need a 7800gt at least!! :p

Just got my 2005FPW for $279 shipped.

ok so it wasn't the nicest way to get it but I had a Proview 19" that was about 6 months old and a client that wanted a 19" LCD and a PC

SO I buys me a dell dimesnsion with the 30% coupon and just swapped out the 19" Proview for the 2005FPW

and Viola

$279 2005FPW

if it wasn't for the fact that the Dimesions didn't have the 2405FPW as an option I woulda gotten that one. I am holding out hope to do that with my L90D+ some time later this year.

No I swapped out the 19" for the 2005 and the 19" only cost me $279

so it actually only cost me $279 for the 2005 and nothing out of pocket.

I have a 2005fpw and I wasn't able to make movies run in true full screen without losing some of the picture somehow. Is there a video setting or something in the dvd player or the video card that I have to set to be able to do this?

danman81
11-12-05, 10:37 AM
i prefer the 2001fp just because i do much more text-based stuff rather than wide screen mutlimedia applications such as movie watching or game playing like HL2. i prefer the higher pixel count and more vertical ratio for documents and such. the 2005fpw is more of a multimedia display, imo, as it also has the better contrast ratios/brightness/refresh rate, synonomous with good movie/game experiences. i wonder if dell will add any more lcd's to their lineup in 2006.

BrutalDrew

The 2005FPW is by far the better choice, IMO.

THATS because all you do is game and watch movies, maybe check your email now and then. i never play games or watch movies, all i do is stare at text day IN and day OUT. therefore, things like pixel count matter more to me than refresh rates and wide aspect ratios.

I have a 2005fpw and I wasn't able to make movies run in true full screen without losing some of the picture somehow. Is there a video setting or something in the dvd player or the video card that I have to set to be able to do this? No. The 2005fpw has a 16:10 aspect ratio, whereas the typical widescreen movie format is 16:9. Therefore, there will always be unused portions of the screen at the top and bottom unless you distort the image. The reason that 16:10 is used instead of 16:9 is because a 20" monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio would lack adequate vertical viewing area. The 2005fpw has a native resolution of 1680x1050, so going to a 16:9 AR would yield a resolution of 1680x945. For most users, 945 lines of vertical resolution won't cut it.
