View Full Version : Is my 17" CRT going out already?
I have a generic, HP Pavilion vx74, 17" CRT flat screen monitor that I bought from the local BJ's down the street around Julyish. Lately it been emitting this high pitched frequency sound. Usually the sound will fade out after a minute, but lately the sound lasts from more than 5min and can be excruciatingly annoying. Yea, if I turn the monitor off, the sound goes off, just incase you were wondering.
Also, as of last week, my screen likes to shift from light to dark really fast. As in, I'll be looking at a mostly white screen and suddenly the white will go from a nice pure white to a dull tan, enough to notice, but not to the point of skintone tan. Still, it will flash back and forth for several seconds untill it picks a shade to stick with.
I turn the monitor off everynight and generally take good care of it. Deguassing/Reseting doesn't seem to help.
So... is there anything I can do? Is my monitor dying?
The high pitched whine is probably one of the transformer wires being slightly loose. It's quite common in lower-end monitors (thermal expansion and contraction loosen up things), and fixable if you know what you are doing. Most of the time you'll have a hard time returning the monitor, especially if the person handling the return is older than you and can't hear quite to the same frequency you can.
The colour changing sounds a bit more dodgy though. Possibly a loose connection (maybe even in you video card), unlikely to be the tube itself though. Definately return-worthy if that's practical. If possible, try changing the video card and/or cable to see if that helps.

Hmmm... I probably won't be able to fix anything cause I've never even seen the inside of a monitor my entire life. I know... doesn't mean that I can't learn now, hehe. Well see...

Really? My videocard? Thats strange. I'm planning on getting a 6800GT for xmas so I guess I'll just have to wait till then to see if thats it. I don't have any spare ones sitting around that I can pop in.
I don't think I can return it because I got it from BJ's in July and have surely lost the receipt somewhere.
Well, all the problems died down a little, but now they are back and I really can't take it. Sometimes I'll have a day where my monitor stays the correct color all day... and other times its just bad. Check this out. it stayed like this for a good 10-15 min last night, long enough to get a picture. Then it clicked back. I also had s-video going to the TV but that wasn't effected at all, so I think its definatly the monitor. Another thing, if I do a print screen when its yellowish... and send to a friend, it comes out normal white.

The red scan gun doesn't appear to be painting anything in that picture. Often, that is from a faulty cable or possibly a video card problem (though in my experience it has never been). Else, the monitor has some kind of internal problem. About the printscreen, it is captured way before any of these problems would crop up.

I had a faulty monitor earlier this year. I got a really high pitched whine when I went to high refresh rates (over 60Mhz). The maker of the monitor told me to return it. I only had my unit for a week before the issue started though.
The problem was solved, I went back to my store of purchase and got a newer model even. I am a member of BJ's myself, I think they might take care of you or give you credit for a new unit. They tend to be pretty good with members. If you call them and BJ's says you have to contact the maker. You have two picks. Get it repaired by a tech or send it in. Maybe even buy a new unit, since sometimes it is cheaper this route instead of a repair.

Hmm.... how long did you wait to take it back after you purchased it? I bought this around June this year, and I doubt I'll be able to find the reciet anywhere.
Do you think it would possibly help if I switched the connector for the monitor? You said it could be the cable or a faulty connector, so if I hook up my VGA monitor to a DVI output using a converter, that may solve it? I was gonna do this, but yea... it just looked kinda hopeless at the moment.
Thanks! :)

the yellow screen syndrome happens often to older CRTs that are left on for long periods of time, you're not alone - i had CRTs like that, git a LCD
