It says it needs Dual DVI, what's the story behind that?

Anyways, look at that BEAST!

Apple makes good looking products and stuff...but I still think they're over priced.

Granted theres NO competition to that 30": display, but you can't game on it at the native res...I would be shocked if 2 7800GTX's could drive it...but for PS stuff, everyday other stuff, DAMN!

Thsoe apples do need DUAL DVI out to run them i beleive

The apple 30' and 23' also use the SAME panel the dell 2005 / 2405 's use.

I agree with ya guv on the dual DVI...but when you say SAME panel...I don't get that...maybe sam manuf. because 24 is bigger than 23, and 30 is way bigger than 24...the res fo the 30 is something rediculous like 2560x1600...the 20" dell and 20" apple could be same panel though

isn't it dual DVI cos DVI is too bandwidth limited to power a device running at those kind of res's

both the dell and appl 20" wide screens use an lg.phillips panel and the apple cinema 23" is lg.phillips as well but the dell 24" uses a samsung panel iirc and i would guess the 30" apple uses a lg.phillips but i dont know

the resolution is 1920x1200 so once 7800gtx will probably be able to run it without breaking too much of a sweat, 2 would be perfect. it's not the size you have to worry about, it's the resolution. personally, i'd ratehr get the dell 2405, it's the same res as this and costs almost a third of the apple 30" ($1200 vs. $3000).

The resoltion of the 30" is 2560 x 1600

I have a 2405, and the Apple 30" kills it.

Its the difference of a $744 monitor vs a $2499 one.

You need a 6800U or better with dual DVI to provide the bandwith to power the screen.

Otherwise you only get half an image.

We are talking 2560 x 1600 resolution here. Thats a lot of pixles that need information.

Actually Samsung has a similar sized screen out.

Saem size perhaps but how is the quality - i would be more inclined to go with Samsung over Apple as you are paying alot for the fruity name.

It's the Samsung 323t. It's not very good for anything other than displaying stuff at a meeting or something like that. Maybe even watching movies on it, but with a 23ms response time, max resolution of 1280x768, it's just a very poor monitor overall.

The cartographer at my university has one of those, it's awesome. BTW, this dual-link DVI. Dual DVI is two DVI connectors, either of which could be single or dual link. Dual-link DVI is supported by only the handful of cards alluded to above.

As much as I'd like the Apple 30" screen, I can live with the 2005. It's a fairly deluxe solution, on the whole.

I don't actually know anyone who uses one. They're obviously out there, but everyone I know who has recently made a high-end monitor purchase has gone with dual 20" LCDs. The 30" is so extravagant that I don't know anyone who can *really* justify the extra $1500 over dual 20" LCDs. It's not that a single 30" wouldn't be better, it's just that $1500 buys a whole %$)@-load of other, more practical things.

mmm. Apple displays.
 They make Good Things in Cupertino. (Well, actually, they don't _make_ them in Cupertino, they design them there.)

As previously mentioned, the 30" Cine requires a somewhat specific video card that does dual link DVI. I have seen several in action at my and other universities, but I don' t think that I would ever buy one. The max size for me would be 20", which is not an outside possibility, since I am looking for a nice desktop display.

You could buy FIVE of those Samsung 204T 20" monitors for the price of that Apple.

Then again, you could buy five Apple 30" monitors for the price of a car.

Wonder how you'd even go about that with the Dual link.

There are a couple of photographers on the forums I frequent that use it, and I saw one in B&H but didn't demo it...IMHO for this purpose it's not worth it, since scaling a photo at 25 or 50% in PS works fine enough, actually better if you want to resemble print output, and if you want to inspect an image zooming in on a normal monitor is more than acceptable There's also no reason to need all that space for thumbnailing even with a photo-heavy sports shoot, since you take things in pieces anyway.

Publishing, on the other hand, I'd think would be incredibly awesome and justified on this display...I mean if Apple weren't the manufacturer...
