I need recommendations on a all around decent LCD 17" for gaming, watching movies, applications and sharp picture.

I walk through retail stores looking at the tons of LCD's on display and despite all their different contrast ratio's and brightness level, I still have no clue which one is better from the next one over, they all look different then what the specs say sometimes.
I get mixed opinions on almost every LCD I read about, but I just would like to know...as my first lcd and for great quality is there one out there that anyone can agree on is just awesome? for the price and quality...this I want to know and if anyone can tell me...sweet =)

depends on the user, I thought about getting a 19" but I am happy with my 17", 19" would be too big for me.

19" has the same pixels as 17" why pay 100 more for more space between the pixels?

Well if you go with the 19 for gaming dont games look better at the native rez of the monitor ? If so the native rez on the 19 would be much higher. Plz fill me in if Im wrong on this matter. When I was purchasing mine a few years back it was something to consider.

You could always look at the Dell 2001FP. Darn nice 20.1"LCD and mine looks great when gaming.

My girlfriend always says size matters, so I got her a 19" and she was very happy!

fry...I don't understand your question or reasoning? 17's and 19's both have 1280x1024 pixels....the 17 has them tighter together and the 19 more spread apart...should look the same either way.

Oh and lordkosc....your girlfriend was just trying to be nice! :p j/km just messin with ya

I just installed 3 of these for a client, they are VERY happy.

Speakers are nice for office use only. THe 3 year warranty was a real plus, US only.

well ok...hrm are there any LCD's that come with the nice glossy finish that are good for gaming? I really like those, my friend bought a 19" NEC that has glossy finish and was brighter than any LCD Ive ever seen.

Also all of BenQ's monitors I See on newegg seem to be @ 16.2million colors which means the monitors dithers and not true 16.7mil...are there any ones you guys recommend that dont dither?

You have to compromise somewhere. The super fast 8ms response time panels that the hardcore gamers want won't have 16.7 million colors. You will have to drop down to the 12ms response time panels to get 16.7M. But, that's ok, because a good quality 12ms panel will still do good at games.

both run at 1280x1024 for all of the models that I know of.

it's a real toughie. Just recently I bought the cheapest LCD I could find (15" Norcent for $100 after staples easy rebate). Never heard of the company before and the specs looked pretty poor. IT has a 25ms reponce time, yet when I game, it games just like I'm on my CRT, yet a TON crisper. The only time I personally notice the ghosting is when I move my mouse very very slowly around the desktop. Other than that, I'm pretty satisfied. I wish I had more resolution, but I don't think I could game much higher

I've got the Samsung 915n, 19", 8ms response time, and it's great for gaming, watching movies, working in documents/spreadsheets. I play FPS games, RTS games, and the odd 3rd person RPG.

Colours aren't quite as vibrant as my old CRT, and there is a very slight ghosting effect, though it's not really noticeable in the thick of the action.

Really, it's worth the trade off in lower power consumption, lower heat generation, and less strain on the eyes.

I agree, this is a gorgeous display. Worth the size upgrade as you bump up to a 1600x1200 native resolution.

As for the glossy displays I am undecided on those still. My laptop has one, and it certainly drew my attention the first time I saw it, but the drawback to it is very apparent when dealing with a dark background. You get one heck of a glare or reflection off of this glossy finish, so if you play alot of dark games this probably is not the best finish as you will often be staring at your own reflection in the monitor.

Man I love my Samsung 730B. I WAS using a NEC 16ms SyncMaster with the plactic cover on it. I bought the Samsung 730B, and I wouldn't trade it for any other LCD. I have it running through a Monster DVI cable and boy games look spectacular. Everything, desktop, DVDs, games is soooo clear! Best picture I've seen on a computer. The Samsung 730B is one of the best LCDs on the market from my experience............ Closest LCD I can compare it to is the new ones by LG, which are also cream of the crop.

get the expensive ones with the "shiny" screen surface. they look much better than non shiny ones.

k, fine call it the glossy ones. words and everything are much clearer on these. words can't describe how good words look on these with clear type. my NEC(glossy) is definately better in terms of image quality than my old samsung 910N.

actually, before reading some other opinions about gloss in this topic, i was looking for a glossy display in the store. they just look better. oh yeah, not to mention more expensive

*rubs NEC 1970GX "my baby"*

oh yeah, the nec has one of the best bases out there in its class. its amazing how flexible this baby is.

haha! did you friend buy a 1970GX? if so, than pat on his back!

8ms, 700:1, 400cad. yes, at 400, you'd expect it to be bright. but then again, so are 99.9999% of lcds. actually, i have mine right now at 0% brightness, 25% contrast ratio. LOL.

no ghosting Whatsoever in fps or movies.

The Hyundai L90D+ is an excellent gaming LCD monitor as is the Samsung 930B. In fact, they both use the same Samsung panel. I'm a little behind the curve, but a few months ago when I was shopping for a new monitor (I got the Dell 2005FPW), the Hyundai L90D+ and Samsung 930B were 16.2M colors. Maybe they improved them? But, according to this review, the Hyundai L90D+ is 16.2M.
