On my 17" NEC MultiSync LCD1700V the native resolution is 1280x1024. In the Display Properties > Settings menu I can change the resolution past 1600x1200. The only side effect is that I have to move the mouse around the screen to scroll to the edges to see the entire screen. I know it's unlikely, but is there any way I can make any higher resolution fit onto the viewable area? Or am I stuck with 1280x1024?

Yup pretty much. Thats the downside of having an LCD

how does it work on the laptop screens where they can get 1600x1200 on a 15 inch screen?

It's simply a matter of cramming more pixels into a smaller area. Rather like why both 17" and 19" LCDs have a native resolution of 1280 x 1024.

err if you want a big setting you need either a 20-24 inch lcd... for anything under that you will probably max out at 1600-1280 or 1280-1024

why dont they do it for 17 and 19 inch screens then if they do it for 15 and 17 inch laptop screens?
