also say if the native resolution is 1280 x 1024, and i am gaming at 1024x768 will the quality degrade?? if it does will it be really bad??

the native reolution is what the lcd will look best at, its the acutal number of piixels on it. sp yes 1024x768 on a 1280x1024 will be nasty especially since the different aspect ratios

if the quality is going to be bad, how bad would it be?? i pretty sure my system is able to run most games at the lcd's native resolution, but i know one or two that might struggle and therefore must be lowered

Well...look at at this way...an LCD has pixels that are physicaly set...it has say 1280 across and 1024 verticaly. A CRT can aim electrons so that it can be say 800x600 or 1600x1200 "pixels"...

When not running the native resolution the monitor can do a couple of different things depending on the monitor.

It can:
A, stretch the image so that it fits...so every now and then some pixels will be doubled up...i.e. the running 800x600 on 1280x1024 every 3rd horizontal pixel will be duplicated...and verticaly not quite every 3rd (different aspect ratios and stuff)
B, blackout pixels not being used...so you'll get black around the image which isn't being used...no distoration.
C, aspect stretch in which it will stretch the image to fit the screen but keep the aspect ratio (For example widescreen LCD's are 16:10 resolutions or 16:9 and gaming resolutions can be 4:3 or 5:4...so this way the image isn't stretched to look funny).

The amount of distortions depends on the 2 settings your trying to run....if they're half the size exactly there shouldn't be any distortion (as it just uses 4 pixels to every 1 of the original and it works perfectly because they're still square).

Your best bet is to goto a best buy or something and get on they're LCD's there and mess around with the resolutions.

It will be nasty trust me. When I stick 800x600 on my 1024x768 LCD it looks horrid. Try to find a way to play at a differet res.

I use 1024X768 for most desktop apps with a Dell 2005FPW and it looks great. I can't use the higher resolutions with my 48 year old eyes (stuff looks too small). I do a lot of photo work and I see no distortion at 1024X768 on my monitor. Since I have a X800 XT, I bump up to native resolution for gaming. Gaming is the only thing that seems better to me at native resolution. There are some resolutions that do stretch or distort the image, but if you play around with settings you can find a lower resolution that will work fine.

yeh my main concern was for battlefield 2 coz i normally run that at 1024x768 and its the game i really play now and again, so 2day i decided to up the resolution to 1280x1024 and thought i wouldnt be able to play, but to my suprise its smooth as silk, all settings on high with 4x AA, so i have ordered a tft and should be here next week.

anotehr thing i noticed in windows desktop is wen i up the resolution to 1280x1024, the icons and everything is really small, will it be like this as well on the tft monitor??

Yes, that's the downfall of 1280X1024 on the desktop, all the icons and print are tiny. Too tiny for my old eyes. But, you can leave the default desktop resolution at 1024X768 and just use the higher resolution in the games. In fact, you have to specifically set the resolution in each game anyway.

1280X1024 on a 19" lcd does not look too small.

LG makes good monitors. I just don't know anything specific about that model. With 12ms response time it should be good for gaming. My 17" Samsung 710N was 12ms and it ran games perfectly.
