View Full Version : My 2nd (old) 18 inch CRT monitor is making a very high pitch squeek and won't stop :/

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I've had the monitor for around 4 years now. Its a Dell 18 inch CRT that came with my first system. I now use it as my 2nd monitor off to the side of my 19 inch LCD.

I don't need a 2nd monitor, but I really do like having one. So if I could fix this annoying high pitch that would be great. Anyone have any tips?

OK I just googled my problem and came accross a solution that said to change your refresh rates. So I moved both monitors from 60 to 70 Hrtz. The noise stopped (thank God) but now I have a new question.

Is there any downside to running either an LCD or CRT monitor at these higher refresh rates? Will this wear out my LCD screen faster or anything of that nature?

You were running a CRT at 60hz? That must've been pretty hard on your eyes, no? If your monitor is rated to run at 70hz or better then there shouldn't be a problem. Most people run theirs much higher.

What rate should I run it at? I thought the human eye could only see at 60 hz anyway?

I like 100-120 refresh rate for my crt.

I notice the flicker of the screen at anything lower than 75.

But is there a real explaination for the screen squeek? I mon has it tooo but only reducing to 60Hz gets it out... but the flicker is killing my eyes

My solution for the squeek? Whack it! Hard!

...does the trick, but I only do it on my machine at work...

Seem to remember something about it being coil vibration that produces the squeel. You get it more or less from anything that steps voltages up or down..

What is a refresh rate for an LCD monitor?
