View Full Version : monitor trippy after power outage
the power went out, now my monitor is trippy. when i turn it on, it slowly turns colors and one sort of bleeds/fades into the next. it doesnt display anything and does this when the cables are disconnected. its a very cool effect, but unfortunately it's not very useful at all :(. its a sony model SDM-X72. i can post a video of the trippy monitor if someone hosts it.
anyways, i would love to be able to fix it, but i have no idea where to start. i'm guessing theres a problem with the power converter (internal), but i would like to know if its easily fixable before i spend $190 on a new one from dell.

if degauss or moving it around the room(to eliminate any interference problems) doesn't work i'd say it's fubar. very little one can do to 'fix' a monitor. and getting it repaired will often cost you about as much as a new monitor.
yeah that was what i thought. i also just attempted to disassemble it and i haven't been able to get anywhere. i removed all the screws, and there are 2 clips on the bottom i released, but after that, i feel like im going to break it when im trying to pry apart the 2 halves. once i get a new one i think i'll get it apart come hell or high water. maybe i'll be able to scavange some good parts. video (https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/tjgresham/web/P7220181.MOV)

EDIT: Just realized this is an LCD. Rather bizare problem you are describing for an LCD.

A similar thing happened to my monitor just a few weeks ago after the power went out, everything pretty much is shaking on the screen if you look closely as if the monitor were at a 50Hz refresh rate. Haven't been able to fix it so far.

oh, it's a lcd. then the degauss or moving around room is useless on this.

If this was due to a power surge, your homeowners should cover it no questions asked.
I'm sorry you had some bad luck. It's possible something could've compromised the LCD panel and air could've got in there and hosed things up, but I suspect the power outage caused an electrical surge that damaged some of the critical electronics.
Either way, since you had a and real power outage, and a surge (which is pretty much a given after an outage) this would be incidental damage and beyond your control. Homeowners should cover it.
I hope this is good news for you. :)
i already looked into that. my dad said that if we claimed small things like this, our rates would go up. he would rather just help pay for a portion of a new one.

Well Zip, it sounds like you have a very kind and considerate Father. I hope you get your new moniotr up and running soon.
Some insurance companies will raise rates depending on your type of coverage. Your Dad knows best how to take care of that. :)

holy.. i thought it was an intro to a horror movie at first lol, where did you buy it?
You might want to invest in a decent UPS too.
i bought it at newegg almost 2 years ago.
and yes, the blame can be placed squarely on my old-as-dirt "surge protector" that is nothing but a splitter now because of its age (yes, i read the front page article discussing surge protectors. no, aparently it did not sink in).
maybe i will finally get a UPS. i'd have to get a good deal on it, but now i feel more of a need for one than i have in the past. maybe instead, i'll just unplug my stuff when theres a storm. its not like i'm really doing anything productive on my computer

I wouldnt do that. I saw someone LITERALLY fly into the wall behind them from "fixing" their crt.

if you read the thread you'd know its an LCD.

Yeah. I posted about how dangerous it was to open up a CRT, then I realized it was an LCD.
Good luck with the replacement.
i just purchased the dell 19" ultrasharp for $250 (including tax and a 256 sandisk cruzer micro). check slickdeals if you're interested, theres a slew of deals on this monitor (right after i ordered, there was a post where you can save $6 more if you buy it with a set of speakers).

Yeah, I was close to buying two 17" lcds or a 2005fpw.... I just can't bring myself to do it though.
