I had a beautiful black 21" Dell Trinitron flat CRT w/ dual input.. Nice.. But lightning struck my house and my step-dad's emachine crapper was killed and his old 17" CRT finally died. The only sad part to this story(besides my house catching on fire) was that I had that nice 21" monitor that worked fine before. It turns on but it doesnt say anything like "No signal" or "Check cable" and after about 5 seconds the green power light turns orange and blinks. Nothing else in my room died except my Phoneline network card which was connected to the phone box that the lightning traveled through. I had 3 other monitors in my room at that time and none of them were affected. There's no noticable burn marks on the 21" either.. I would love to get this working, it looked so nice with all my other black components and the dual input was handy. Any easy solution? or any ideas at all?

Why buy a whole new monitor if there's just a simple problem wrong with this one. It turns on and it was working fine before. Anyone know enough about monitors that they could help me with this one?

Maybe you could try a TV repair shop? They can usually work with monitors as well, since they're the same technology basically.

It's not unsafe to open something without power connected to it anyway.

Yea I was thinking about that but I don't know how much they'd charge and if it would even be worth it. I'll try to find a friend who knows about TVs and such and see if he can work on it. Maybe it's a lost cause... but it turns on so it's almost working.

A monitor, YES, when unplugged they can still be very dangerous, not safe until you discharge it.

Did you try the monitor on a different computer? If it still doesn't work and you have home owners insurance, you could put in a claim for the 21", 17", and the emachines.

The monitor doesnt work on any computer. When you turn a monitor on it's supposed to say something like "Check Cable". THis one doesnt say anything and the power light just turns orange. We already got $260 for the 21" and $120 for the emachine but when the insurance guy was here I didnt notice that the 17" was dead, so we have to fill out a form if we want the money for it. I just think the 21" should be able to get working pretty easy. Oooooo well.. and I've opened PSUs many times and I'm still living :-p

Really consider yourself warned and very lucky. You honestly can sie from that type of shock.

Monitors and PSU's are Not FRU

Just dont, ok. If you want to take the chance, very well then that is fine. I just dont recommend it, It also says it on almost every power supply and Monitor, If not on the unit then in a warning slip that came with the documents.
