hey all
ive got a dell d825tm monitor, great monitor, a trinitron and is in fact made by sony (i opened the case, and it had sony all over the little pcbs by the side of the screen and the label on the screen thingy itself said sony too!)
it is a great monitor, sharp, great colours, even got opq mode and everything, some may say a little small it being only 15" and people are buying 21" tft's these days, but im only 15, and i only paid £15 for the monitor.
the thing is that im beginning to have some problems with it, the cable, the 15pin dsub is really taking the **** now, if you move it just a little, you get a red, blue, green or yellowish tinge on the entire screen, and then you have kinda 'move' the cable, until its back to its normal white self, and its becoming really irritation now.
i opened the case of the monitor up, just to have a look, and the cable, is in fact connected to the PCB using some sort of 'plug/socket' mechanism and in fact isnt soldered on.
is there anyway that i could perhaps swap this cable out with one from a different monitor?
thanx

Sure. That should work just fine. CAUTION: CRT monitors have high voltage capacitors which hold a charge even after the thing has been unplugged for a while (some of the newer one's will bleed off the charge, but most of the older ones will not). Yours is probably in the "older" category. You do not want to accidentally touch the terminals on these capacitors, as the shock can KILL you. Be careful inside that thing, ok?

thanx for the advice.
i am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to electrical components, and this whole capacitor thing seems to get me worried, i will be ok as long as i dont go and touch the actual terminals correct?as in the legs on the bottom of the cap, im not so stupid as to randomly stick my finger onto random components on a pcb unless i absolutely have to!
was opening a psu the other week, as it seriously needed a clean (live in a dusty room) and i was absolutely ****ting it! was pretty careful not to touch anything and used long nose pliers for most of the work and avoided sticking my hand into it as much as i could!
isnt the first time ive opened a monitor either! lol.
thanx

I mentioned that on the off-chance that you didn't know anything about that sort of thing. If you know what a high voltage electrolytic capacitor looks like, then, to be on the safe side, simply use a screwdriver with an insulated handle, and short the two contacts. That will discharge the capacitor(s). As you mentioned, just don't touch anything you don't need to touch and you should be ok. Good luck.

Is there a noticeable improvement in Screen Quality when you switch from the standard cable to something like a Monster Cable when using DVI on an LCD?
