May I recommend the Hyundai L90D+ (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824179014) at newegg now for $360 with free shipping.
It's 19" .294mm dot pitch, 700:1 contrast ratio, 16.2 million colors, 8ms TN+film panel (same as in the Samsung 930b) very ergonomic with height adjustment and up/down tilt.
I've got two of these babies and they are THE LCD screen for gamers, no ghosting at all in CS: S and NFSU: 2. I LOVE these things and will never do CRT again :D

anyone else? any crt recommendations?
The best CRT I've had was a 19" Sony Trinitron. But, I've gone to LCD. Winston recommended the Hyundai L90D+ which is an excellent gaming LCD. It uses a Samsung panel, the same as the Samsung 930B which is another excellent gaming LCD. Both have 8ms response time and are fast.

Dell 2001 or 2005, for under 300. Check slickdeals.net for specials.

I had the same CRT, I still do in fact :)

LCD for more future-proof and does not weight a ton like CRT :)

I prefer LCDs over CRTs because LCDs are better for your eyes and don't take up a ton of space. I don't have any experience with 19" panels, but I'm using a Samsung 710N right now and it's awesome.
I second the Dell recommendations. Right now their Ultrasharp 1905fp can be had for well under $300. 800:1 contrast..... Check it out at their website

IMO LCD's still aren't there yet, you need to make too many sacrifices.
IE: Good quality regular browsing/color reproduction or good gaming. With an L90D+ or the like, you get good gaming with little blurring and no ghosting, but IMO the color reproduction is terrible (noticably worse than my Viewsonic G90FB CRT) and the viewing angle is so rediculously bad solid colors are different shades across the screen.
Of course, you can get one of the dell IPS panels which has much better color reproduction for general use and movies, and a much better viewing angle, but you get much more noticable ghosting/blurring in games.
With a top of the line Diamondtron tube CRT, you get perfect gaming and great regular desktop use. Also, at 85+ hz and a good flat screen CRT, your eyes are just as comfortable as with an LCD.
It is a myth that LCD's are better for your eyes than CRT's. Crappy CRT's with low refresh rate and non-flat screens will of course bother your eyes more than a nice LCD, but a good quality flat screen CRT is just as good as an LCD.
I'm currently debating trying a Dell 2005FP 20.1" widescreen LCD once my Hyundai L90D+ refund goes through (I ordered it, got it, couldn't stand it, and sent it back), or just going with a monitor that I know for a fact is incredible and will last me until it dies: The NEC 2111 black 22" CRT. I'm leaning heavily towards the nec right now, I'd love widescreen but the Dell has manufacturing issues and how good of a monitor you get is really a roll of the dice at the moment.
The NEC is almost 600 shipped, but it's probably the best non-professional (read: costs under $1k) crt there is. You can get a great 19" nec with a mitsubishi diamondtron tube for much, much cheaper.
The NEC 2111 is like $520 at newegg, a bit cheaper elsewhere. You can get the NEC FE992 from newegg for $219, it's just one of a dozen great under 300 dollar 19" crt's.
My personal experiences leave me with having a hard time recommending an LCD over a good quality comparitively priced CRT right now.
Malakai is one of the few exceptions. Once most people see how nice the LCD flat panels are nowadays, they will never look back.

I guess I'm another exception then. I'm not sold on LCDs yet, and I won't be until price and performance surpass those of CRTs. IMO, LCDs are overpriced and the only real benefits I see is that they take up less space, are easier to transport, and consume less power. If you're not terribly concerned about these features, I don't know why any gamer would take an LCD over a cheaper CRT.
I love my Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 920 (19" Diamondtron CRT), and the only upgrade I would consider would be a bigger CRT :D. I'd buy an LCD for my wife who spends most of her computer time surfing the web and creating MS Office documents.

If it weren't for the other problems LCD's have, I'd give the Dell 2005fpw a harder look.
However, here are some problems people are having with them:
1) Backlighting issues, ranging from mild leakage at the corners to HORRID leaking from the sides. The Hyundai I had didn't have much, just a little along the whole top edge and even more along the bottom. But the Dell's are really a crapshoot, some aren't that bad and others are absolutely unusable. Recent polls at the hardforums show about 40% of all new models recieved in the last month having bad bleeding and requiring RMA's.
2) Dice roll with dead/stuck pixels, and whether or not where you bought the monitor from will take it back due to them. The Hyundai had a stuck red pixel dead center of the monitor. It stuck out like a sore thumb, and most forums have dark colors so it was VERY noticable. I had trouble getting newegg to take it back without charging a restocking fee due to this.
3) Blacks being blacks: This depends on screen type and manufacturer, the nice IPS screens which have true 16.7mil color reproduction unfortunately have bad contrast ratios, making true black look very greyish instead. TN+Film panels like the Hyundai L90D+ have much nicer blacks, but much worse color reproduction and viewing angles compared to an IPS screen. The blacks issue influences watching movies greatly.
Like the above poster said, if you need the space savings or lesser power consumption, then I'd recommend an LCD. But if you use your computer for multiple kinds of tasks such as gaming, browsing, a little photo editing, and watching movies, no matter what LCD you get you will have to sacrifice quality of one action to get better in another. You do not need to make such sacrifices with a good CRT.
I have a Dell 2005fpw on order. I'll let everyone know how it works out. Sure hope I don't have those problems. Most of what you are describing were QC issues prior to February.
My current monitor is a Samsung 710N and it's been absolutely perfect. Not one single complaint other than I want a bigger panel now. My LCD experience has been better than yours I guess, but I love the brightness and image sharpness of a panel.

The May A01's and A02's from mexico seem to be having just as many, if not more, problems than the February ones. They have a very low reportage of dead pixels, but heavy reportage of backlight issues ranging from minor to severe.
Good luck though, if you get a good one, you'll probably like it :D

i just got a Fuji 19"...............http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=384343
This is the best 300 bucks I've ever spent. You'll be hard pressed to find a 19" LCD with .264 dot pitch...........everything looks razor sharp on my LCD. It has an excellent viewing angle, good response time, and it's DVI to boot. The reason why I didn't go with one of the more expensive 8ms panels was because of the crappy 140 degree viewing angle.
best advice youll get
if you have room get a crt for best picture quality
if you dont get an lcd

You will get more "playtime" from the opposite sex with a LCD. Women like LCDs, they don't like CRTs. Choose wisely.
--------
Its a buyers market for LCD's below 16ms seek time with DVi. If you need a definitive answer:
Dell 2001 FP with MonsterCable DVi-400 Cables
Got my Dell 2005fpw 20" widescreen delivered last night. The packing box says "assembled in Mexico" and "A02". I'm really lovin' it so far. Very impressive. I used the Dead Pixel Buddy program and have zero bad pixels. I don't see any noticeable backlighting issues. I played Half Life 2 for about an hour at the highest resolution possible and there was no ghosting. You can keep your outdated CRT... this LCD flat panel is staying on my desk.

I had a Flatscreen Trinitron in 17", now I have a 19" 930B flatpanel LCD.
It's not even questionable, the LCD is better in every way, hands down.

Hyundai L90D+ monitor? Hmm, I'm going to have a look on that model to see how it looks. Future Shop or other place should have it in stock, I'll go check out this weekend.
I've been thinking to upgrade my old CRT 15" this year.

Au contraire, I have one of those IPS panels in my 2005FPW and I regularly play CS:S/Doom3/HL2/KOTOR with no ghosting at all.
It's a fantastic screen, and I have no dead pixels or backlight issues. We also have four of them at work as well.

Futureshop doesn't carry them, I already looked in two stores and the website :(
LCD all the way. At my friends house we compared his 19" 930B LCD to his little brothers 19" CRT (Sony I believe). The 930B won hands down in every aspect. Mind you, this is a $450+ moniter, but I'm buying a 930B myself as soon as I get my new system, with a DVI video card ;)

LCD's flat out suck. I have tried many of them and just came back to Crts. Just couldent deal with the gosting. Even on 12 and 8 ms unites. Its just to viewable for me.
I have a Mitsubishi 930sb, which is the best 19" crt ever made. You cant buy them anymore. I would look for any appature grille crt. get them while you still can.

I got my dell 2005fpw recently and I too was scared but as it turned out I may have one really unnoticeable dead pixel at the top left and no real backlight bleeding that will make me care enough. I did notice that I suppose the black wasn't really black as it was... lit up blackish/gray or something, can this be fixed? But yeah, I had the Rev. A01 May one and I am completely satisfied with it. Widescreen is pretty badass and I didn't notice any ghosting on WoW or CS:S
