ok, so I have a NEC MultiSync 77F that I got a little over 2 years ago...

All has been fine and dandy until recently. When I go to turn it on, it doesn't actually power up right away, but rather clicks for a while and the power led flashes on and off... eventually it does power up, but I'm just wondering why its doing this, its just over 2 years old, it shouldn't be going bad already!!

Maybe the picture tube is going out.

when you hear click noise...

for CRTs: there are two possibility
1) the tube discharges the capacitor for your electron gun too early and/or capacitors going out.
*this happens when your monitor gets old*

2) there is a electric arc (over air) on two disjointed circuit boards.
*this is highly dangerious, you should have a professional look at the tube and possibly throw it away ASAP*

for LCDs:
The starter for your backlight is going out, consider getting another starter or a new backlight depends on how your backlight is made. for those who have starter built onto the controller circuit board, you are SOL. for the very lucky few owners of modular starters, contact your vendor and get a new one.

Its been working fine for the past day, and when it does do it, if I hold the power button in it will power up all the way.

Kinda throwing a random guess out of the hat, but maybe the starter isn't getting enough power to start untill it jumps itself several times?

I don't know anything about the insides of a monitor, but I know that if my car were having a problem similar, I would replace the starter (or ignition switch). Although I hope I don't have these problems since I just replaced it a week ago

There is a kick start circuit in there responsible for getting the CRT running, and it could be acting up, but in this case my money's on a bad soldering joint right around the power switch, or elsewhere on the circuit board.

A ticking sound is usually caused by high voltage shutdown, in other words a protection circuit kicking in and cutting off power to the high voltage section of the board.

It could be failing capacitors in the power supply, a bad/cracked flyback (unlikely), or most probably, cracked or cold solder joints. Since it comes up when it's been on for a while, my bet would be solder joints. If you know how to do it safely, disassemble the monitor, discharge the CRT and the +B regulation capacitor, and resolder *everything* on the board.

The actual picture tube in a monitor very, *very* rarely fails. Even though that's a lot of people's first guess when a TV or monitor goes out. ;)
