Ok, so I have a LCD screen that displays the image, however, the backlight isn't working. What are my options in terms of fixing the display? How can I troubleshoot what the problem is. (the actual backlight, the control etc etc)

Well the backlight is a thin bulb embeded in the LCD

It can be replaced... but the bulbs can be hard to come by.. and it would be tough to find a good backlight on a bad screen. but it can be done

and opening the LCD can be very diffucult for the first timer

i know of a place locol that would fix it and replace the inverter if in needed it for like 200 bucks

Seems pretty expensive. The backlight was fairly new, as was the monitor. Basically the monitor was brand new, after two days the backlight stopped working. Dell sent a new monitor and now there's an extra. So it might be worth fixing, might not.

If its under warranty, send it back. You mentioned Dell, they have a very good replacement policy. I just got a 20.1" 2005FPW and the contrast was horrible, I called them up and had a replacement in 2 days.

I did have it replaced, now I have 2 of them; the broken one and the new replacement.

you could always do the projector mod found in the alternative mod section. they don't need a backlight and since you already have a monitor without a working backlight....

sounds like an idea. how big is it? you may need to set the resoloution down to display all of the pixels on a projector, but it's free.

Get another replacement. If it is under warranty, replace it as many times as it takes to get a good one. Dell pays for return shipping.

Isn't that like....cheating? We shouldn't be abusing the system....

besides, they probably keep track of the serial numbers so that might not go over so well...

I'm almost certain that you're supposed to ship the malfunctioning unit back. I know I did when I replaced my Dell LCD

I know with Dell laptop batteries I've had replaced under warranty you have to send them the old one back (in the packaging the new one came with) within 30 days or they charge you full retail for it. You might want to check.

No, it isn't cheating. It is using your warranty. If you have a bad monitor sent to you and you call to have it replaced under warranty, and the replacement is bad, then by all means they should also replace that one since it is also still covered under the original warranty.

I am in the same boat, I bought a Dell 2005FPW LCD and the first one was bad, so I called to have it replaced. Now that I got the replacement, that one is bad also, so I am going to be sending this one back and getting another replacement.

It is using the warranty to protect your purchase. It is a faulty piece of hardware and should be covered under warranty.

And yes, you are supposed to ship back the bad units.

you should read over his posts

You are suggesting to him to return an iteam for replacement that he should not even have..

If dell send you a replacement for a broken screen.. they expect that broken screen. You might wanna check into that

What size is it?

If its a small one, use it to make a projector.
