Hi,

What is the difference between AGP and PCI-Express slots? Are PCI-E slots better and faster then APG or will AGP give you better frame rates? Also is APG being phased out? and if so how long until they will be no longer existent? Basically I am looking between an APG graphics card and a PCI-E graphics card and i'm not sure which one I want as I have limited knowledge on the difference slots.

Thanks
Jeff

I belive I posted this in the wrong forum. Could a mod please move it to the Graphics card forum?

Thanks
Jeff

The fastest AGP card is 8X, PCI-E is 16X. You must have a MB that supports whichever you choose.

AGP is indeed going the way of the PCI and ISA slot cards. While I am sure you will still be able to buys AGP cards for years to come yet. Do not expect the upcoming high end cards to be offered in AGP.

The Slot basically, one is older than the other. They are not backwards compatible, Ie you can't use agp in pci-e and vice versa

Are PCI-E slots better and faster then APG
Better, depends on your POV. Faster yes, the theoritical bandwidth for PCI-E is faster. But so far the 8x AGP slot bandwitdh has yet to be completely used by any graphics card

or will AGP give you better frame rates?
Depends on the card, and its memory and core speeds

Are they being phased out, yes to a degree, if you go intel the highest chipsets use PCI-E only ie 925Xe and 955 use only PCI-E, same for AMD, only NF3 can support AGP, if you go the Nvidia chipset route, NF4 supports PCI-E

Basically I am looking between an APG graphics card and a PCI-E graphics card and i'm not sure which one I want as I have limited knowledge on the difference slots.

If you want futureproofing to a certain degree go PCI-E. But most of the higher level cards have both an AGP variant and a PCI-E variant, like the Nvidia 6800Ultra has both.
