View Full Version : Monitor Glitches - NEC FE991sb

For the last few months, I've been having constant problems with my ~2-year-old NEC FE991sb. The screen has moving horizontal lines, twitches, flickers and re-sizes. Sometimes the top and bottom inch both squash down and then pop back up. Very strange stuff. I started looking for electronic/magnetic interferance right away. Moved everything I could (nothing obvious near my computer) - no change. Figured I'd burned out my Radeon 8500LE and bought a BFG 6600GT - no change. Played with wires in my box and outside - no change.

I wanted to send the monitor back to NEC for a new (refurb'd) unit, but they no longer offer advance replacement for my model and I would have to pay to ship it, then wait a few weeks to have it serviced. Can't stand being that long without a computer. . .

Brought my boss's computer home to install XP for him and the problems are gone! His box is pretty modest, someone else built it for him. AXP2000+ on a KT333 board with 512mb of RAM and a WD120Gb SE drive. nVidia GeForce2mx200 and an Allied 300W PSU.

My system is:
m2500+ @ 215x11, NF7-Sv2.0, 512mb XMS3200c2 (Bh-6,) BFG 6600GT @ 550/1100, Enermax 350W PSU, 160Gb Seagate SATA

I'm wondering if the PSU could have anything to do with it. I know a 350W is probably a little on the small size for my current set-up, but it worked perfectly for the last 2+ years - voltages are stable, even while Priming or running Benchmarks. The computer is 24/7 stable with the exception of the monitor issues. . .

Any ideas on how I can isolate my problem?

Thanks!!!

Update -

Stumbled across a possible fix:

Last night while messing around with my Boss's computer (switching mouse, keyboard & monitor back and forth) I knocked the charging/receiving cradle for my MX700 behind my desk, was in too big a hurry to mess with retreiving it and left it on the floor the whole time I was working on his box. Now I've been back on my box for an hour or more and the issue has yet to return. Either I wiggled the right wire, or the MX700 cradle was the source of my EFI. . .

??? Anybody heard of this?

I had the same problem with my FE991. I sent it back to NEC through RMA and they resoldered something. Problem is now gone. I think the FE991's have a 3 year warranty, so if your problem comes back you might want to have them fix it before it expires.

It only took like 2 weeks for them to ship mine back to me. Tough I know, but they shipped it back 2 day. I of course broke down and bought another monitor because I wanted one for my second computer anyway, as I was using a KVM switch.

Guh. Seems to be back - not as bad, but its back. Must be temp related (it got cold down here a couple days back.) Anyone know how/what I'd solder or how to test/find it myself? I'm fine with a soldering iron from a few years racing R/C cars. Any monitor techs out there?

This is a somewhat unrelated question about your CRT. I have recently acquired the same model, but it seems that the hum that is produced upon turning on the monitor is somewhat excessive. I have been working with an lcd for the past three years so I am unsure whether or not this is a problem. Thanks for any information.
