2005fpw and DVD's

I put in braveheart which is widescreen and I still have pretty large bars on the tops and bottoms. The dvd is 16:9 and my res is 1680x1050 (16:10).....anyone know why I'm seeing bars? Shouldn't they almost be gone?

The aspect ratio of a widescreen TV is 1.78 (16:9). However, DVDs are not in this format:

If the movie is 2.35:1 (i.e. proper "anamorphic" widescreen) then you will see relatively large black bars.
If the movie is 1.85:1 then there will be no black bars (or at least only very small bars).

I played mine in windows media player, big black bars all around.

I then played it in interactual player, no bars on the sides and only half-inch bars on top and bottom.

I suggest different players.

You nailed it right on man. Even with a 16:9 ratio screen there should still be a slight area of black on top and bottom (1.85:1 = 16.65:9).
