I hate the eye strain problem with crts. I have mine right now at 85hz, but its still a ***** looking at it for any extended period of time over like 15 minutes. Not to mention whemn i get the eye strains and then squeeze my eyes, it makes the squishy sound.
i'm thinking of making the switch to lcd. my primary concern is, WILL IT STOP THE STRAINS!!
also, what response time/contrast ratio or whatnot *is noob* should i look for in lcd if i BARELY game, but just as a precaution if i ever do again.

Easy fix there, go to CompUSA (BestBuy etc) and use one of their PCs for a half hour. If the salesmans starts to bother you threaten to stab him in the eye with a pencil.......
I had a Viewsonic with 25ms times and it occasionally ghosted in FPS games. Now I have 16ms Sonys and I have never seen them ghost.........
I fairly inexpensive monitor that I was *HIGHLY* impressed with (looked better than my expensive Sonys) was Hyundia ImageQuest. You can get 17s at Newegg for well under $250 - I used a pair of them on a customer build and they frickin rocked........

After using an LCD for a couple months, even a CRT at 85hz will start bugging me pretty quickly. And 60hz is just instant pain. Though everyone (and their eyes) is different, I think you'll be very happy with just about any LCD if that is one of your major buying points. They are a very big improvement on CRT in the eye strain aspect. Good luck :)

Yeah, LCD's are better....esp for me where I went from a non-flat 19" monitor to a 19LCD. The screen size is larger as well. One thing to watch is the brightness. LCD's can be very bright and so keep an eye on the brightness as this might start to hurt your eyes if you are in a dark room with the LCD on 75% brightness. During the day I turn the brightness up and at night I turn it down somewhat.

k, so response time i should look for 16ms or lower right? what about the contrast ratio thingy? 450:1?

I'm assuming you want one for gaming?
If so, yes, 16ms or lower is better. If you can get a good deal locally, do so as buying mail order runs the risk of a dead pixel. Contrast ratio can sometimes be innacurate.
The new Hyundai L90D+ is well rated...can be purchased at newegg if not available locally.

contrast just makes the colors more vivid.
One thing I did was set the red green and blue settings on my dell.
I set them to
85 Red
90 Green
100 Blue
This gives makes the LCD not as bright (because some LCD's are just so bright that can hurt your eyes). Hard to tell for eye strain for me because I have this new 2005fpw and my old 17" CRT by it's side (dual monitors).

I started getting headaches from playing poker too much on my CRT, ViewSonic G90f. I'd been wanting an LCD for long time, but price/specs ratio wasn't where I wanted until recently. I got the BenQ FP931 (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=24-014-063&depa=0) after researching my options. It has 16ms response for my gaming, good reviews and nice price. No more headaches and I'm very pleased with it, haven't even tried it with DVI cable.
peace.

yea im getting mad eye strain from my current crt. im getting the hyundai l90d+ in about 2 weeks and i can hardly wait.
everyone is forgetting about a MAJOR factor in alot of LCD's....brightness. Some LCD's (even at low settings) are insanely bright and in low lightrooms will get ur irritated FAST.
well u can turn the brightness down pretty easily so thats not nearly as much of a problem as eyestrain. I've used lcd's for about 2 years now and couldn;t imagine going to anything else. I'm upping my dual 17's for dual 19's next week. The l90+'s are fantastci monitors and cheap to boot. 370 for a 19" lcd is amazing.
Alrite i have the same problem im on a 15" Lcd and 1024x768 @75hz and have quite sensitive eyes although i dont have any probs with my vision its fine i have had to adapt my viewing with larger Fonts etc and it has helped alot...
I would go in and do what **aaronrkelly** posted except dont stab them lol
Make sure you get the right set up if ure going to buy and Lcd i wish i did
