View Full Version : Oh YEAH! Dell 2005fpw in DA Hiz-ouse!
All I can say is...."Merry Christmas to me!" What a sweet LCD! Yeah man! I love it, I am soooo glad I got this beauty! I was pretty hesitant at first it took about 3-4 days for me to finaly make up my mind but man-O-man is this a nice monitor! So far so good, there are no dead/stuck pixels, and I haven't checked for the backlighting issue yet but it doesn't appear to be noticeable.
I "was" running a Nokia 445pro 21" (sony trinitron tube) but not any more...heh! I noticed a BIG difference immediately, the LCD is brighter, crisper, clearer & I still keep high fps...(135fps in HL2)...even at 1680x1050, which is the native rez for this screen.
Yes I am using the DVI cable. :)
I am amazed at the image quality, it really caught me by surprise. I did not think it would be that much of an improvement over the Ol' tube, but it sure is, and I'm so glad I bought it!
I used the 25% off code I got from playing the Delf game and it cost me $599 + $45 tax  = $644 shipped.
scope out this screenie I just took of HL2 @ 1680x1050.....135fps!
This is a photobucket size down from 363kb to 205kb. It looks even better in real life....

Congrats on the amazing monitor purchase. This is proboly going to be the monitor I get when I jump to LCD's. You should think about getting a Monster Cable DVI cable ( you can get them off ebay for about $60) I bet it helps improve the IQ even more.
What is it like playing HL2 in Widescreen? I bet it makes that game even better :D.
Um, send the 60 bucks to me and it will do you just as much good. The 'D' in DVI stands for digital, meaning it's a 1 or 0 thing. Your cable either works, or it doesn't. You can't improve upon the picture by changing the cable, something the good folks at monster cable hope you don't realize.
@ Larva.....Heh! Its nice to have a mod around who has crisp humor and gets to the point.
@ Ad rock
Yep! Its a whole new game with the LCD. Completly different!
Here is a shot with the tape...The viewable dimensions are 10 3/4" x 17 1/8" x 20"
A side by side comparison to my bodascious tube monster.

Well Tom's was doing a review on the IQ of ATI cards and stated they noticed a significant difference in the DVI compliance of the different cards and stated that a cable should be looked at when coming up with the rating's.
Also our own sticky on LCD's states that a higher quality cable will make a noticable difference in your IQ. Also there was a member on here that made a thread that he reduced his ghosting by 50% when he upgraded from his stock cable.
Here is the Tom's Article ( I know no one likes these guys, but the test seemed pretty in depth)

The quality of the the DVI output on the card might well matter. That is not the cable. I'm not too concerned that Tom's thinks the cable matters, it's either 1 or 0...

As far as I know, I have never authored a sticky on LCD's, but should you ever discover such a work I would be glad to take a look at it and explain how it does not say cable matters to DVI (aside from work or not work).
It is the analog inputs that produce ghosting. The chief benefit of the DVI input is a complete abscence of ghosting, and this is not a function of the particular cable you use.

Krag, first off...You suck I'm jealous :P
Second, is that first dimension 10 3/4" the depth of the monitor? I thought they wouldn't be quite as deep...The I like to have my keyboard right under the monitor and rest my elbows on the desk I'm typing on, and 10 3/4" is close to the same depth as my shortback PS775's (CRT's)
Nice monitor...I woulda got one but I'm a dual monitor user....can't justify two of those things!

Saaaa-weet bro! :attn:
Did you have any defects with yours? Such as the dead/stuck pixel or back light problems? after I had mine a while I noticed that it does indeed have a backlight problem, its no big deal to me, just as long as the backlight problem doesn't get any worse....does anyone know if it will?? I couldn't get any one to talk to me about it thru Dell tech support...(India outsourcing)
Playing HL2 is a whole new experience with the 2005fpw. :bday:

I have only used it for about 3 hours so far but as of now it is perfect no dead pixel or anything.
You are right about HL2 it is alot better I was running a 19 lcd but it still made a big difference :D
Set the screen to an all black background such as the Win XP default screensaver and look for white light leakage around the edges.

I see that you bought the "sound bar" as well. How do you like it? Does it pump out the sound? I almost bought one but thought that an extra $45 was too much.

Have either of you guys noticed any ghosting or smearing with that panel? I love the size and price of it just worried still about those nasty side effects of LCD's. Some people say they can not notice anything at all just wondering what you thought about it.

Yea I got the speaker set awhile back from WOOT for 29.95 a great deal they still offer it sometimes and it sells out in about 10 mins.It has the best sound I have ever heard on a cpu.If I was you and needed some new speakers it is the only way to go.

I had a 19 lcd that ghosted real bad and I saw the same as you about people saying no ghosting at all.You may see alittle if you turn super fast but it isnt bad at all.If you have MOH Pacific Assault during the jeep ride in the Pearl Habor part you may see some smearing just because the jeep is driving you thru the base real fast. That is all I have noticed so far but if you are worried about ghosting dont be if you arent looking hard for it you wont ever see it :attn:

I dont think I would be super picky like lots of people are when they get their new LCD's. That's always the problem though when describing "ghosting" or "smearing" is that it is sooo subjective. Also with that Dell screen there is no place I can go and demo it to see if I can actually notice anything.

Actually I have not noticed any smearing or ghosting in HL2 and I have been looking fo it too. I tried to play Doom 3 with 1600x1200 rez, it didnt' look as good as HL2 but I'm sure thats because D3 doesnt' have a 1680x1050 rez. I haven't tried any other games yet.

What's your guys refresh rates for your 2005 fpw's? I only have one setting at 60hz. It says on the "tech specs" it can goto 75 to 83. Mine isn't giving me that option :-( Also, what is your guys color quality at? 32 or 16 bit?
i am defenetly gonna get this LCD ASAP Yeah Baby!
=AG=Racer9

At 1680 x 1050 I only have two refresh rates one is 59 and the other is 60 at 32 bit color not sure why I have a 59 but I do.
All I have is 60hz. why would you want more? It looks as good if not better that my Trinitron tube runinng at 100hz.

I have had mine for a few weeks now, and every game I play supports widescreen :). Thankfully, forums such as www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum have tweaks and guides to making your games work with the widescreen. Many support it natively, such as HL2, Dark Age of Camelot: Catacombs, etc. Most of the rest can be tweaked to use it perfectly :). Mine has no backlight leakage whatsoever, and has just one stuck-on green subpixel in the bottom left corner of the screen that it has had since I got it. I absolutely love the thing... it is gorgeous, bright, sharp, has no noticable ghosting that I have seen at all while playing games, an even backlight, a good viewing angle, and is thin (about 2.75 to 3" thick not including the stand). It looks great, and the widescreen itself is just awesome. You can see more on your desktop and in games. I got mine for $549 and change thanks to a $50 off coupon and the Dellf 25% off LCD's coupon. It couldn't have been more perfect!
If you're hedging on getting it, just go for it... there still haven't been any major sites with any reviews, but user feelings on it across various forums that I have read all are positive, aside from a temporary number that were reporting backlight issues with a run over the course of about a week. From what I gather, those issues are all fixed now.
O I agree I was just answering his question :)
Here, let me remove the blackjack I just buried in your forehead....hunh,.. hunhh! Plop! There, all better now...we cool bro! ;) :D
@Golden Tiger, thanks for the sweet linkage bro! I just bookmarked it.
I adjusted my Doom 3 rez thru console tweaks and I must say...that it looks very nice!

Just adding in my opinions:
Picked this monitor up about a month ago....and I love it.
No ghosting whatsover, no matter how fast or furious the action got in HL2. I'm currently playing EQ2 at 1680x1050 at Very High Quality settings and it is simply beautiful.
I've noticed a bit of the bleeding on the upper-left portion of my screen, but it's only noticable in completely black screens (like the windows boot screen) and isnt much of an issue even then. I have one dead pixel on the middle-right of my screen, but I dont even notice it honestly.
Sharp text, bright as all heck, and much easier on the eyes. I was very hesitant about moving to an LCD, but trust me it's worth it. I'll NEVER go back to a CRT.
The only major issue I have right now is DVD playback, but I think it's probably a software issue as I have had zero problems playing games.
Overall GREAT monitor. Two thumbs up.

I unfortunetly have not had good luck with my 2005fpw I have 5 dead pixels, 2 of which are extremely noticeable, and the worst problem of all is the backlight issue, all four corners of my monitor have a horrendous backlight issue, hopefully the replacement I have coming if they ever ship it will fix these issues if not I guess I'll go back to my crt until a quality 20" lcd at this price range comes out

Sorry to hear that bro. :(
It looks like bro ZGOZZ got a bum display too. My only bad part on mine is a medium to minor backlight issue...I guess I should feel lucky.

Ok I just recieved my replacement monitor and I am happy to report that it has zero pixel problems and no backlight issues. I must say considering you get a good one, this monitor cannot be touched for the price/performance.

Thanks for the link, they drop the monitor in a "Wide Aspect" catagory now...
either way now there are no discounts available for it. So it's going to have to wait for a bit before I pick one up.
In the mean time does anyone know about the resolution 1680X1050 if this is not supported by your vid card are you S.O.L or is there some kind of patch or file to help support this RES?
Thanks inadvance for any Feedback
When you hook the monitor up your videocard usually should allow you to change to the native resolution. Mine works fine (Ati 9600XT). Haven't heard of anyone having problems getting the native resolution.
