Right well, I'm a complete utter newbie when it comes to LCDs and everything. I've read the stickys on the conrtast ratio, response times and DVI / Analog. But the one thing that still remains in my mind is... What one? I mean i look on a page for LCD screens and I see names I've never heard of and random model numbers that all seem to promise the same things.

So I thought I might as well ask here, since yuo people seem to be the joyous owners of LCD screens. I'll just write out what I do quite often so you might be able to help me out :)

Heavy Gaming (fast paced, ut2k4 as well as a bit of CS, Wc3, Doom3, HL2 etc..)
Video editing
Movies
IRC (so clear text would be a bonus, from reading one with a DVI would be good for this. Is that right?)

Would I notice the difference from a 16ms LCD to a 12ms LCD when it comes to the gaming etc? (Its only 4ms difference O_o). I take it that i wouldn't have an trouble with videos and movies or IRC?

And last but not least (yes, sorry to be a pain), I'm only really in the market for 17" LCDs as I and the lower the price the better :sn:. Can you recommend any models or brands (DVI would be a bonus too:))?

Oh and at the moment I am using a Philips 107S 17" CRT :)

Thanks in advance

FYI the S, B, and P flavours of the Philips screens are determined solely on the basis of quality control. Screens that come out of the manufacturing process and just happen to work really well with no defective pixels become "P" screens and are given a better warrenty. I imagine this is the case with every manufacturer.

Edit: If you're gaming and making movies you probably want to have both the CRT and LCD attached to your comp. Then you can decide on the fly which screen is best for which process.

The Samsung syncmaster looks interesting.

I just made a thread on the same subject of cheap gaming LCDs, it should help you http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=351338

I am going to pick either the Benq FP767 or the Samgsung 710N-2, both are about $320 if you can afford that, and both are very good moniters.

Why is there a contest between those two? The 710n-2 offers a faster response time and higher contrast ratio. Looking at a review on the samsung 710t, it seems that samsung is one of the better brands when accurately advertising their specs for response time, but maybe i'm missing something here.

Actually I did get the Samsung 710n-2. I thought it had a 16ms response, but I did a side by side comparison online and realized it did have a 12ms, so it was a hands down win to the Samsung. Now, the hardest part... waiting for it to arrive.
