View Full Version : Those with A Vewsonic P95f+B or a NEC FE991SB-BK...
I would like your personal accounts with these monitors. I'm torn between the 2 , both being about the same price. I'm leaning towards the Viewsonic, but haven't ruled out the NEC yet. Anyways, I would like to know the pros and cons of these monitors to help me make a decision.
Thanka yous.

I own the FE991SB, the picture is crisp and bright and it's the same tube that is in Mitsubishi Diamatron displays. You might have heard that this display has 2 visible lines going across the screen horizontally but they are barely noticeable unless you have a solid background. I don't mind them. No complaints here.

Hi,
NEC not only has 2 Super Bright modes for Picture Viewing and Film modes, it has also refresh resolution of upto 1920x1440x60Hz. This mode is not so good for using Windows of course, but it provides 1920x1080 High Definition display capability at that refresh with a 4/3 monitor. (Technically 16/9 is 1.333 times wider than 4/3 display, so the equation is 1080x1.333=1440 lines.) I have used WMP10 for High Definition Video clips without eye difficulty with NEC FE991SB. (But only in full screen mode, othervise it flickers with top and bottom toolbars!) If you mistakenly set at a very high refresh for ex: 2048x1536x200Hz NEC FE991SB automatically displays at it's possible capable limit, so there is no possibility of Blank or Black screen because of overscan. This also protects the internal electronics form deformation.
The tube has an original mask uses both Trinitron and Shadow Mask technologies. Tube is flat inside the glass side too. Philips tubes for example are not flat inside the glass and Viewsonic %80 uses Philips tubes. I don't know P95f+B uses which tube? But probably Philips. They also have diffuse effect at the edges. NEC is good at the edges too. Finally NEC is TCO 03 compliant. The only monitor that I can advise better than FE991SB is Sony 21 inch GDM-F520 for 4/3 display that I know. It has upto 2048x1536x85Hz refresh if you can afford. I have both of those monitors and the display of NEC is as good as Sony. There are some better specialties of NEC over Sony are, manual adjustment for Super Bright modes. You can set SB mode 1 and 2 by yourself. Sony hasn't got that bright mode user controls. But also Sony goes blank or black if you set a higher resolution. Technologically, NEC seems newer than Sony and really it is. Sony is TCO 99 compliant NEC is 03. (Samsung monitors have Philips tubes too by the way, I won't advise them!)
If you want to pay for HDTV, NEC is at it's limits, but at the very limits of acceptable performance. 1 or 2 years later, HDTV will be everywhere. There are upper models from NEC too. They are FP912SB and FP2141SB. You may check the avalibility of those models too, if you wish!
Bye,
Wow, thanks for all the info. Now I am totally undecided again. :p I'm not really interested in HD capability. I just want a good monitor with a sharp picture, and a good refresh rate for $300 or less to last me the next few years. I sick of my crappy Mag 17".

From the Newegg reviews it sounds like the P95 uses a Philips. People complained how the monitor isn't truly flat. It rounds a little on the corners.

I have the viewsonic listed above and it is awesome! The ultra bright mode is great for gaming without messing with gamma or washing out colors. Do not use it with a light desktop, or you will burn out your eyes, its really really bright. Clarity is really good, colors are great. If it isnt truly flat, its not noticable enough for me to tell. I got mine refurbished from Viewsonic for about 160, see if you can get one that way, its a great deal.
Where did you find the referbished version? I can't find them on Viewsonic's site.

Hi,

I love my viewsonic, it's super clear and the colour is great. Just like the NEC it has 2 super bright modes as well, and what makes it sweeter is that it can do 1920x1440 at 70Hz which is a bit better than what the NEC can do. The highest resolution it can go is 2048x1536 at 60hz
Although i have never seen the NEC, I highly suggest the viewsonic because it has exceeded my expectations.

I'll also vouch for the p95f+B, I love mine, it's an awesome monitor
I don't think you could go wrong with either monitor as they probably perform relatively the same. This is what was stated on one of the computer sites. Maybe pick the lower price model?
PS: the only 100% flat CRT monitors are the LG flatrons. All other pure flat monitors have a slightly curved inner tube while only the outer glass is completely flat. I had a 19" LG flatron and the picture was great. Too bad the geometry was horrible and got replace with a 21" dell FD.
Mkay.
Anyone know of some reputable monitor review sites? I want reviews that aren't just the reviewer hyping a product just because he got it for free. Know what I mean?

I got it off of the viewsonic site. I think they put them up when they have them available, so you might have to check back and wait a while...
I think I'm going to get the Viewsonic. It has higher refresh rates, and is $10 cheaper than the NEC. It was a close rate, but the P95 pulled ahead in my mind. Unless, of course, somebody has something to say that changes my mind.

Well all I have to offer is another glowing personal review of the Viewsonic. I purchased this monitor almost a year ago and I love it. 100 Hz refresh rate at 1280x1024 and the brightness level button is really handy.
If you go with the viewsonic you wont be disapointed.
