Hello, ever since we moved to Europe (220V AC), sometimes my monitor at boot up starts to make a very annoying high pitch sound, that usually stops a couple of minutes after. It stopped happening a couple of months ago, but now it's started again! It's a compaq CV535, 800x600 at 85htz refresh rate. It sometimes drives me crazy because turning it off and on doesn't do anything (sound stops when I turn it off, but I then turn it on and it begins again!), it's driving me crazy, so any help would be much appreciated.

thanks,

Dan

sounds like either the flyback is gonna blow, or you have a capacitor that is leaking very noisily. My bet is on the flyback.

Try lowering the refrest rate. See if that helps.

For the first time I experined that sound too and i'm having a DELL D1226H 19" monitor. This si a 1992 manufacture model and I also think it must be a flyback issue. I'll post my result atfer checking the monitor withign 2 days time for general puropose.

I'm not sure if you are speaking of this, but my monitor makes a lightsaber like sound when it turns on but only for a few seconds...I purchased a 19" NEC and have been unsure whether or not this noise is normal...I have owned crap brand 17" CRT's and I do not recall any of them doing anything similar to this.

You know, I have always been able to tell if a TV or monitor was on in the house from hearing it( the high pitched sound not the sound from the speakers :D ) Even when new and not making strange sounds like your decribing I can hear them. Nobody else in my family can hear it. I may be part dog or something... Anyone else hear monitors like that?

Are you sure that the power up there is 220 and not 230? If it is in fact a higher voltage than what it was made for here in the states that could have something to do with the squeeling. I have heard that noise before and it was on an older monitor that I had. It usually seemed to do it when I had the refresh rate set too low, not too high. The monitor liked the 72 refresh rate and not the 60 that windows would set it at.

i have an old ibm monitor (really old) that makes that noise it usually stops after about half an hour and does it more on higher refresh rates

Haha, funny you mention that, same here! Ever since I was a kid, I can always tell when a TV or monitor is turned on.

Ok poepole after a full service of my momitor that sound went off. Actually my brother is a good electronics items repair guy so he removed it and cleaned and told me some capactiors had some oxcidice or somer=thing and cleaned it along with the dust that resting there for long time :temper:

Now I'm a happy along with my old Dell monitor. So i think it's better to give some service to the monitor and it will go away for good.
