View Full Version : LCD 5ms Release Date?
When can we expect 5ms lcd screens? I read that prototypes are already in existence. I debating getting the new 8ms screens coming out or waiting for the 5ms. I think I would be happy with 8ms, but I wonder how long of a wait it would be.

At work we deal with 32ms lcds and I find them hard to use, my border(guy lives downstairs) has a 25ms screen and I can notice a bit of a difference. They both ghost a little. I just bought a 16ms screen but I dont have it yet, Ive used 16ms screens and they barely ghost at all. Now considering the difference between 25 and 16 being able to tell virtually no ghosting on the 16, I'd think a 12 or 8 would be perfectly fine.
Its just technology advancing. I'm sure they will cost your left nut to buy one thats 5ms, if you can get an 8ms for a decent price (or a price you deem decent enough) then go for it. You wont notice much off of 3ms difference.

I personally would like them to start improving the viewing angles, and making DVI more readily available to us poor people, rather than faster response time. 12ms is fast enough in my opinion.

no way is 12ms fast enough...(imo)...
i've seen 12ms and am still not satisfied, i have yet to see the 8ms, but i doubt it's a great improve. i think i 'might' be satisifed at 4ms.
for daily usage, like watching a movie, tv show, or playing games the the sims, 12-16~ will do.
but when you pop a game like half life 2, quake, and even prince of persia 2, you will notice that the pictures are not clear...just a simple truth. i think someof you may have forgotten about your crt, but just run the two side and side, dont focus your eyes on the thing that doesn't move much, focus it on the texture of the background. IT BLURS when the camera moves. this blurring to most is not bothersome and can be 'forgotten' of after sometime at 12ms, but it still blurs.
i know it blurs just a little bit, but how many of us here spent hundreds so they can run on sharpest graphics mode, res, with AA and what not. the truth, when you run all those settings on an lcd...and the screen moves, all that, though not taken away, is partially stripped of it's complete beauty.
with that said, i am very happy with my 2005fpw...overall it runs game very well. but i can never say it's any close to crts when it comes to gaming. the only reason i choose lcds over crts is space and perhaps the most important of reason, reduced eye strain.

At the last LAN party I went to I was gaming on a Nec 17" 16ms LCD. We did games like UT2k4, CS:S and NFS Underground 2. While playing I didn't see any ghosting or blurring of any kind. Only thing that got me was gaming with the lights off.
I use a 50ms (typ) LCD and I don't notice any ghosting or maybe my eyes just got used to it. I've been using it for 3 years.

I was considering a 8ms LCD was just not sure it will will cut it too. I did have a 16ms and the ghosting/blurring made my eyes water. So RMA'ed. A 5ms panel sound like it might do but then again I'm not sure if I can put up with the backlight tft offer. Always seems to be uneven and cant display black correctly.

Are the 8ms even out yet? If they're not then waiting for a 5ms isn't worth the wait.
what are the "response times" of CRTs? i know this isnt ususally a term associated with CRTs but id like to know the comparison rate
Response times, if relating CRTs to LCDS, would be sub millisecond.

Yes 8ms are out: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/lcd18.html#amo_2d019_2dhy
"1280 x 1024 with 60Hz recommended resolution"
Now, how does that work? 60Hz is 16ms response time....shouldn't this LCD be 120Hz?

I really think that maybe it is just because the ratings are innaccurate. Most company's conviently measure their response times so they appear lower. One rated at 16ms could be 30ms on a good moniter. The only real way you can tell if it responds fast enough is to see it in real time, actually working. I wouldn't be surprised if those claiming they see ghosting at 16ms and lower that their ratings have been inaccurately portrayed, or they have quicker eyes.

Personally 16ms is good for me. 5ms response time is crazy, that'll be pretty expensive when it comes out. Perhaps it will drive the slower LCD prices down though.

i have no idea what responce time my lcd has (im pretty sure its sucky cause my eyes water after i use the comp for a while) but i cant see ghosting on it so il do with what i have...
12ms is fine, i currently have a 12ms and a 47ms . I love both but i love my 12ms alot more beacouse games are somewhat more clear. The 47ms does play games really good.

I got a 16ms NEC 17". Its great at gaming and I have very little issues with it (only one is I got a dead pix thats blue arrg).
I plan on getting another LCD in the future and a 2005fpw really does sound extrealmy tempting. Thing is yes eventually faster displays will come out thats good. But my personal experiance with them right now is that anything under 16ms True Rated displays is good at almost everything. I'm sure the 5ms ones will be the bomb in comparison since theres such a difference going from 25 to 16.

I don't think it will until the 5ms monitors become more mainstream. Very few people will buy the 5ms monitors.

Well it depends on the price.

I think it depends on your eyes. I honestly dont see any ghosting - I have looked for it on my 20ms monitor.
