in display setttings in widows under advanced you can control the refresh rate, i noticed that some of the options that it says my monitor is incapable of appear to work, will setting my refresh rate slightly higher than my default lkley to damage my monitor if used for extended periods of time?
this question is about my crt monitor (75Hz 'max" 10Hz increase), however i tried a similar ting on my dads lcd and noticed a definite improvment in sharpness.

so, my question is will a slight (10Hz) increase in the refresh rate of a monitor above it's nominal aximum rate cause damage if used long term?

You'll definitely damage your monitor if you go above the stated max refresh rate. With some newer monitors, no picture will be displayed if you go beyond it's operating limits. Could the actually refresh rate on your monitor be at 75Hz instead of the 85Hz stated in windows? In one of the other post, someone stated you would burn out some controller on the LCD if you run it at a too high refresh rate.

I would not screw around with my max refresh rates if I were you. They set the limit at what they do for a reason.

I would tend to agree. The lifetime of your monitor may be limited if you set the refresh rate too high. It will also void your warranty I would think.
