Need this question answered for someone, if possible please. I'm not a camera guy so I can't tell him what to do.

When I transfer a digital image from my Sony digital camera to a word document, the picture is MASSIVE, and I subsequently spend a lot of time reducing it.

I suspect that part of the problem lies in my camera. Can I tell it to send smaller pictures, and if so, how do I tell it to do so?

You can set them to take pictures at a lower resolution, which are smaller.

There's only 2 ways to do this in the camera.

1 - If your camera has an email option the camera will auto resize the pics u've selected to a smaller size. Usually 320x240 or smaller.

2- Before you take your picture, set the image size to something smaller like 800x600 instead of the default, which is the max size your camera allows depending on how many megapixels it is.

You're going to get better quality images if you shoot as high quality as you can in the camera, then post-process in Photoshop.

You can setup an action in photoshop if you like, then whenever you transfer a load of photos over from the camera, you can just batch process them.. One click, you get smaller images - and because they're resized down from larger images (and possibly a lil unsharp mask if you so desire), they're probably going to be better quality than out-of-the-camera lo-res images at the same size.

But don't take them too small... just an 8x10 image printed at 300DPI is absolutely huge (2400x3000 - 7.2MP) to retain the detail.

If you're printing like a 3"x2" image, then you only need to go down to 900x600 resolution to keep the detail. You go any lower than that, the images are going to start showing pixels in the print.

www.irfanview.com is a great free application that will let you resize and do basic editing on your pictures if you don't have Photoshop.

Irfanview can resize folderloads of images though its batch conversion facility. You need to consider the output resolution (in pixels), which probably means screen resolution 1024x768 or 800x600 pixels, minus all that crap your friend has crowding the document viewing pane. If it's destined for a printer, it should match the printer resolution instead.

I think the vast majority of digital pics are one-shot affairs that never make it off the screen (and shouldn't), so better use a cheap low res camera for "snaps" in the first place. Guess what kind of film the reporter for a black & white print newpaper uses.
