View Full Version : radiation and CRT / TFT's ?
i dont know a lot about monitors, but afaik CRT's generate a bit of radiation, is this correct? I also believe that the amount of radiation is so minimal, that only few people can be annoyed/hurt by it.
Someone i know has that problem though, when she sits near a CRT for about 5 minutes, she'll feel it in her arm. maybe thats the radiation?
Now im wondering, are there also "radiation-free" monitors? do TFT's have radiation?

Yes there is some form of radiation in CRT's. All I know is don't break the tube. A friend did that and got 2nd degree burns (ouch) across most of his body. Not a prety sight, then again don't know how old that monitor was anyways too.
TFT's (LCD's) are just light diodes, many little lights. In otherwords no radiation is possible from them, unless your considering electromagnetic radiation as one.
thanks for the reply, i dont know what kinds of radiation are emitted by a CRT, but that person is troubled by it, do TFT's also have elektromagnetic radiation? since they dont use the elektromagnetic field to generate the image (afaik) <-- sorry for the vague explanation but i know the words in dutch, just not in english :/

everything is a tad radioactive even light, i believe, but most won't hurt you

If the person's arm is hurting, get them one of those funky ergonomic split keyboards, and an adjustable office chair and make sure the person sits right. I'm sure the sun is much more dangerous than a monitor, even if its 15 years old (I'm basing that on the fact if you sit in front of a monitor for a few hours without sunscreen, you don't get burned. If you sit in the sun for a few hours without it, you are in a world of pain.)
The radiation problems with CRTs were mostly wiped out a decade ago... Now pretty much all of them are shielded to some degree blocking most of any radiation they produce.
ohke.. so then the persons arm must be hurting from something other than the monitor.. ill ask them what they based the radiation theory on...
the person in question is my girlfriend her mother, so maybe they just arent up to date about ergonomic positions :)
and biggs, there are lots of kinds of radiation lol :p UV is the one that makes you burn afaik.
60% of your radiation intake is from the air you breath.
The radiation emited is Low Energy Electronmagnetic Radiation, and it does not cause ionization (which is the harmful part in most radiation).
