This is an article on OLED's pretty cool stuff. 0 response time and much brighter than LCD's. They have displays already but none are really available to the public yet.

Here is a snip from another review
Think thin display and you probably think of an LCD panel. But an up-and-coming display technology that uses organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is actually much thinner than an LCD—even thin enough to be placed on a plastic film. Since each subpixel in an OLED is controlled individually, you get an image that's sharper than on a CRT and potentially of better quality than on an LCD. OLEDs are as responsive as CRTs, so you don't get any smearing from slow pixel response times.
sounds cool. I love progress.
That was posted over 3 years ago and we don't have them yet do we? :-\

Um yeah they are all over the place. Right now you can find them mainly in Cell phones. Samsung has one they will be showing off in 2005 that is a 17 inch model.

OLEDs rock. They should be cheaper then LCDs I knew i was holding off for something :). I want one of these babies as a graduation present

They should be cheaper then LCDs
A major perk. Even with the huge markup that will instantly happen when these things are out of their beta stages, they won't be as expensive as LCD monitors, on top of the better image quality as well as thinner display. Best of all three worlds anyone?
*Waits impatiently*
I knew i was holding off for something :).
rrrrrrrriiiiiggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhttttttttttt...... .....
Are there any cell phones with colour OLED's currently out?
The only product i've heard of with a colour OLED screen actually released is the Kodak LS633 Digital Camera (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/kodak/ls633-review/).

Yeah, I've know about these for a while, when anybody asks me why I still have CRTs, I tell them I'm keeping them until OLEDs come out.
<< Not Stupid :D
Nice to know they are getting closer though.
i keep hearing closer and closer BS. this page was ran in May 31st 2001 so when is it comming out again

Right, the review is dated May 31, 2001. Is there anything more recent on the progress in this field?
*sigh* 'n I was gunna buy a dell 2001fp, but with oleds 'n that other thing that's supposed to bring response time down to 8 ms, seems like I'm gunna be waiting for them to hit market now

your going to be waiting a year + most likely 2.
arn't the 6ms ones supposed to hit the market around jan.

Yeah, but 6ms is still way slower compared to a CRT.
No it isn't, 6 ms is the equivalent of 166 hz. How many crt's can do that.....let alone at their highest resolution.

"Fastest TFTs have so far have boasted with 12ms or 16ms response time. While such response time is extraordinary for LCDs, conventional CRTs have response time of less than 1ms, which means that flat panels are still behind cathode-ray tubes in terms of response time."
a crt can have a .0000001 response time, it can only physically draw as many fps as it's highest supported refresh rate.

OLED's are very close. In the new issue of CPU magacine they have several articles on them. That is what got me looking into them. They said that models of 40 inch TV's and 17 inch Computer Displays should be hitting the market in 2005.

This month, Sony Corporation will commence mass production of a full-color Organic Light Emitting Diode (hereafter OLED) display, which will be first implemented in the new Sony CLIE 'PEG-VZ90' personal entertainment handheld
damn....
now i need dell to release a new revision of the 2001fp ^_^

I'm happy with my one CRT and my one LCD. Next thing to add to my collection would be 1 OLED display :) Preferably 19" ;)
psh, if they're cheap I'm thinkin quad monitor setup, at least tri for hl2 :D
Neat stuff on the Sony link, if their specs are accurate... I bet they're going to have a HUGE premium when they first come out, though.

That huge premium will most likely be what LCDs are costing everyone now as it is. Apparently these things are cheaper than buttons.
I'm hopin that they have good sales at least....

LCDs today are about half the cost of what they were two years ago... and nearly an eighth the cost of what they were 6 years ago. (Yes, I paid $2000+ for a 14" 1024x768 LCD in 1998 - that was probably like 100ms response time).
The problem is that I, and probably most gamers who like LCDs, would happily pay current LCD prices for something better.... such as what they claim OLEDs can do. It's not like these companies are going to make OLEDs cheap just because they can. They'll assess demand and a useable price point and rake in the profits. Perhaps over time they may bring down the price to gain mainstream sales, but I doubt the prices will be low from the get-go.

I have read somwhere that they still having troubles with the lifetime of the leds. Now they are only getting about 10.000 hours and that is not enough to use it. That is enough for use in cell phones and camera's.
I would say that oled will need atleast 5+ years to become what lcd is now in price, lifespan and dimension.

Well one positive point for me hoping that OLED's are cheaper than LCD's is the fact that they can be made using a inkjet printer and in a open air enviroment. Sounds like the manufacturing costs wont be nearly as high as LCD's.

Holy crap i have a CRT and an LCD too! Dual setups are pretty, eh? I take the LCD alone with me to LANs too. Ahh the convenience.
Anywho, this technology looks great. What turned me off about LCD's was the cost, so it's great to see that they're coming out with a cheaper, better alternative to the LCD. w00t!

Based on what I read and know.
Such as: the first oled device will be available for consumers by the end of this year and that's only a mobilefoon.
They still having troubles with the lifetime of the leds. Unless they use the expensive ones (thought that where the blue ones), there goes the advantage of being cheap then.
Prototypes that have been around are just prototypes and can still have to make a long way before they make it to your shop.
And another thing, the panel makers for the lcd's now available have made big investments that needs to be recoverd first and they are going to release some new and better ones first. So the technick that is now used will first be fully utilised before they will go further.
One of the biggest disadvantages of oled are broken leds, you can't replace them. Backlights can be replaced if needed. But then again there must be a lot of leds broken before you will notice it.
That are some of the reasons why I think oled will be 5+ years away from us.
Ofcourse I can be wrong. :santa2:
