View Full Version : Best 19" CRT For Gaming?
Hello there.
Im getting a XTPE soon, and i want to game at 1600x1200.
I have a 17" that only does 1280x1024 at 60hz, so i reckon i need a new one, as it will hold back my XTPE.
What are some of the best 19" CRT's?
These to, seem to be very good:

The IIyama does 100hz at 1600, im really not sure???
Or any others, thanks.
Id love a LCD, but they suck for gaming, and at 1600, no chance.

NEC FE991SB, great monitor.

LCDs don't suck for gaming. Sure, if you want 1600x1200 your probably going to need a 19" LCD. They have lower response times now (most are 16ms, some are now 12ms) and good hz ratings as well. They no longer "ghost". The problem is they're expensive. To get an 19" LCD its gona cost about twice as much as the same size CRT ($400-500 USD), sometimes more. In the next 3 years prices of LCDs, LCD TVs, Plasma and HDTV sets are going to come down dramaticly. See this (http://overclockers.com/tips00607/) article for more info on that and this (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=203663&page=1) thread for info on good LCDs for gaming. I'd love to get one as there are some very nice 17" and 19" LCDs out there for gaming, I just can't afford them :(
My vote goes for Sony...
I have an older model, CPD-G410 and it works flawlessly in 1600x1200...
There a several lcds out there that are capable of high end gaming without ghosting or any other comon gaming problems that occured with older lcds. The one that I would recommend off hand is the one by dell:
UltraSharp 2001FP 20.1-inch Flat Panel LCD Monitor with Height Adjustable Stand
$999.00
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=RC956904&sku=320-1578&category_id=4009&brandid=56
As you can see the only drawback is that it is somewhat expensive. :)
In my honest opinion, go with the NEC FP912SB-BK. You will not regret it. Look it up for the specs. I personally own this one.
Well from what ive read, that dell 20.1 inch ghosts like hell, and to be honest with you, when i spend 600quid or whatever, i don't want to be nervous about ghosting or dead pixels. Ive also read LCD's tend to be a bit darker, for gaming, and generally there inferior to CRT's.
Even the 172X ive read ghosts a lot, to be honest LCD's, are crap for gaming at the moment, hence why i don't want one. If they were just as good for gaming, id definatly get one, as they look sweet, take up way less room and don't produce heat.
Best 19" Monitors:
-> Iiyama HM903DT Vision Master 454 (Mitsubishi Diamondtron FSM, 0.25dp, 1600x1200 @ 104 Hz)
-> Sony MultiScan G420S (Sony Aperture Grille, 0.24ag, 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz)
-> Mitsubishi DP930SB-BK (Mitsubishi Aperture Grille, 0.24ag, 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz)
-> Samsung 900NF (Mitsubishi Aperture Grille, 0.25ag, 1600x1200 @ 87 Hz)
-> NEC MultiSync FE991SB (Mitsubishi Aperture Grille, 0.25ag, 1600x1200 @ 76 Hz)
Usually, it's best to choose an Aperture Grille CRT over an Invar Shadow Mask CRT as the AG's offer better visual clarity, smaller dot pitches, higher refresh-rates and 100% flat screens. The exception to this rule is the Iiyama HM903DT, which uses a Flat Shadow Mask CRT (making it just as flat as the Trinitron FD tubes) and offers features that are comperable (or exceed) today's Sony/Mitsubishi Trinitrons.

yeah, i have the same monitor...but it wont run 1600x1200. it will and it wont really. i can run it at desk top, but it doesnt show the whole desktop. i have to move my mouse to the right to see that part of the screen and down to see the task bar. in games i cant move the mouse over like that because there is no cursor. if your looking for a monitor that does 1600x1200, dont get the samsung syncmaster 955DF

I'm not sure which 20" dell you've read about, but the one I'm talking about has a 16ms response time. If you ask me, that's pretty good for gaming. I don't see any reason why it would ghost under normal situations. A friend of mine has this monitor and it looked great to me, but then again, he was only playing counterstrike. :\
I wouldn't necessarily say that lcds are crap right now. There ARE some good lcds out there if you do your research. I'm not saying that they're just as good as crts, cause I'm not sure that'll ever be the case (as far as picture clarity, brightness, refresh, etc is concerned).
Anyway good luck with finding the right monitor. You have a lot of suggestions to choose from. Looks like the NEC tends to be the crowd favorite right now :)

The only reason an LCD ghosts is if you have it hooked up to the analog port.
A DVI connection makes ghosting no longer an issue.
LCDs are inferior than CRTs or image professionals would use LCDs. But the quality of an LCD has risen dramatically. Just make sure you get one that hooks up to your DVI port (and make sure you have that port on your video card).
1280x1024 is about as high a resolution you're going to get with an LCD though.
That 19" NEC is pretty slick. The 19" Sony TFT is abso-freakin-lutely incredible. 1920x1840 (or something) anyone?
Ironically I was about to post this exact same question... is the Iiyama available in black? And where can I purchase it?
-Frank
I have a KDS ExtremeFlat XF-9e/p, and it is great, best 19'' crt i've bought. They're not that expensive at all too. I can run 1280x960 at 85hz. 1600x1200 at 75hz.

I have the Samsung 710T. This is samsungs top of the line monitor, and the specsa are alot better than the 172x
and I can say it sucks for gaming

Obviously you didn't read my whole post. I explained that not ALL LCDs are good for gaming. Some are, and you have to do your homework to find the right ones. If i had the money, Id deffinatly buy one. The advantages to me are: less heat, less space, better looking (my friend has a dell LCD and we play the same games. the games look so much better on his LCD).
Thanks guy, expecially simguy, yeah ive looked at most of them.
I have found the NEC Mitsubishi DP930SB-BK for 198quid. Cheapest i can find the 454Pro is 233. I don't want the speakers or USB, so the NEC makes sense.
I just hope i don't regret waiting and getting a LCD.

The 2 AG stabilization wires are only barely noticible on bright backgrounds (usually only white).
After 5 minutes, you'll get used to them. :)

I am finding that hard to belive, I have a sony crt Tv and I can actually see the AG inside when tv is turned off, Bow my tv looks really good from far away but when I get up close it looks extremly crappy, Like all pixiilated and stuff, are the AG monitors like that
i have a mitsubishi 93sb and i have to agree with simguy. you wont notice them in games, only with white backgrounds, like word or so.

My buddy has the TFT with the stabilization bars... you notice them in Windows, but completely invisible while playing games. Even though they are noticeable, you forget they are there after staring at it for a while... no big deal for the quality they provide.

nec multisyne fe991sb...iv had it for like 6 months and it runs perfectly...picture is super clear and the brightness can be easily changed for games...
@ grov: first i must say that i dont have much experience with many different monitors, so this litte review isnt going to be very objective or in depth. additionally my english isnt to good, but anyway, i will give it a try.
So, i bought the monitor about one and a half year ago. the main purpose i use it for is gaming, web browsing and some minor office applications.
one factor of the decision to buy this monitor was definately its design, i really like it alot. beside that, one of the first things i noticed was its weight. about 21kg, pretty heavy if you move it around often. next thing is the vga cable. its very long, you wont have a problem with it, only if you damage it, cause its hardwired(?) to the monitor.
one really nice feature is the naviset software. its much more comfortable to adjust the screen per mouse than with the osd. but the highlight of the monitor, which makes it perfect for games, is the "super bright mode". with this feature you can adjust the brightness of the monitor in three different levels.
i love this feature, games and movies look much better with it.
when it comes to iq, as i said, i dont have much to compare it to. i think that its not the best when you want to read alot, but when it comes to gaming it looks (compared to my mates on a lan) very nice and colorfull.
if you re interested in mitsubishi monitors, you might take a look at nec too. afaik they are the same, only difference is the name.
btw. most time i play at 1024*768@100Hz, the exact name of my monitor is "mitsubishi diamond plus 93sb"
some of the higher models are available in black also, they are marked as "bk"
First of all, two of my friends including me have this ViewSonic Monitor, The A90F+, its a amazing monitor, silver and black, plus it has a button on the front for UltraBright Mode, which increases the brightness significatnly, and doing this in far cry, really brings out the color in the scenery.
Diffently check out the ViewSonic A90F+
Thanks a lot dukat, and everyone else. :)

Um not quite. It seems to me that the shadow masks have the smaller dot pitch usually around .20 or .21 and .24 and .25 for the aperture grill. Shadow mask monitors are abundantly available in flat screen, but without the 2 annoying lines.
I have a samsung 753DF.

Just go with a Viewsonic P95f+ then choose a color. I'm yet to be disapointed with this montior, 101hz at 1280x1024 and 87hz at 1600x1200. Comes with three Ultrabrite features, One for the normal computer use, text, internet etc, one for gaming, and the other for DVD's. Truley an amazing monitor.

With a 21" Dell UltraScan P1110 sitting infront of me and 2x 17" Samsung SyncMaster 750s, a 17" AcerView 78ie & 19" Samsung 955DF off to my side, my personal experience and that of many other satisfied AG monitor owners tell me that the AG is the better choice for eye comfort, refresh rates, image quality, brightness and OSD controls.
Smallest AG dot pitch there is available is on the Sony Trinitron FD for the Sony F520 - 0.22ag.
AFAIK, the smallest ISM dot pitch there is available is on the Mitsubishi DiamondTron M2 for the Iiyama Vision Master Pro 454- 0.25dp.
Furthermore, I don't see the big deal with the AG lines. You can hardly see them at all under normal computer use (not during movies, gaming or anything involving non-insanely bright colors), unless you are staring intently in search of them with your nose pressed against the CRT.
I just opened up a blank 1800x1440 white-background notepad window and stared at it for 5 seconds. I saw the AG lines and then they disappeared into the white background when I stopped looking for them, so again I don't see the big deal with the stablization wires. However, I guess to each his or her own.
AFAIK, Aperture Grille pitches (0.XXag) and Invar Shadow Mask pitches (0.XXdp) are not directly measurable against eachother due to the 2 different technologies utilized in generating each pixel on the screen (AG utilizes vertical bars versus ISM, which uses dots).
http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/display4.gif
Also, be careful that those 0.20dp & 0.21dp dot pitches aren't the Horizontal Dot Pitch, which is not truely representational of the real DP of the monitor which is the "Diagonal Pitch" (BenQ likes to use the Horizontal Pitch method - their 0.21dp Horizontal DP is really 0.25dp when measured using the Diagonal Pitch method). Viewsonic does it too on some of their models.
