View Full Version : Everybody read this ; last informal warning

I am sick and tired of the flames and foul language that I have seen in this section. Let me give you a reminder of some of our rules:
1. Absolutely NO personal attacks will be tolerated, no exceptions!
Posts and threads that are solely for the sake of being confrontational are included. Flamebaiting is included. Your posts should display mutual respect and should be rational. Warmongering is included. Thumping your chest and demanding explanations here and defenses there is warmongering.
2. No hard language is permitted. If you feel you absolutely must swear the use of Stars (*) can convey your feeling with out endangering your place in our forums. Saying "S***!" is allowed. Saying "YOU S*** is never allowed, ever!!
Trying to avoid the swear filter is included. If you see *'s inserted in your post after you're done, it means that you've broken the rule. You'd be best to go back and revise your post with tasteful language at that point.
Rememer that the ocforums are to be a G-rated forums.
By clicking the Agree button, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws.
I suggest you all do some reading here:
http://www.ocforums.com/announcement.php?s=&forumid=66
and here:
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=115345
I have been lenient in the past few weeks. I have tried to maintain a presence and to lead by example and remind when necessary when the rules have been breached. Some have shown improvement, and I thank those who have take the time and shown the effort. Others have not, and this thread is especially intended for those.
I am no longer going to be lenient. Any transgression of the rules will be treated with a formal warning, 3-day vacation, or perma-ban as the case may necessiate. If, when posting, you are unsure as to whether your post may violate the rules, it means it probably will.
Consider this the last informal warning to everyone. -- macklin01

OK, it is not just this forum that I have been running into problematic posts. So here is the skinny.
Look at the top of every forum. You see that link to our forum policies (http://www.ocforums.com/announcement.php?s=&forumid=69)? Care to guess where you go when you click on it? You can click on the link in this post if you don't want to go looking for it.
2. No hard language is permitted. If you feel you absolutely must swear the use of Stars (*) can convey your feeling with out endangering your place in our forums. Saying "S***!" is allowed. Saying "YOU S*** is never allowed, ever!!
Swearing does not raise you public image. It does not make you cool. It is not verbal “spice” that enhances you communication skills. It just marks you as someone who swears a lot.
To that end, we have a swear filter in place. It works just fine and keeps the worst of it off of our forums. If you really feel that you must swear, please just type the word. Quire frankly, we are a fairly imaginative lot and as long as you get your grammar sort of close to correct, we can all figure out whether you had a noun or a verb in mind and we can supply a fair equivalent in our own heads.
Also, please do not intentionally bypass the swear filter. If a word is in the filter it is in there for a reason. Adding a blank space or changing the spelling will get past the filter but then the whole place know that you felt the need to intentionally type your way around the filter. Think about that for a second. You had to go out of your way to do it. We know you did and it is a violation of our rules.
7. This forum has a policy of tolerance and inclusion. Prejudicial language and behavior is absolutely forbidden and may result in loss of posting privileges. Racial, Sexist or religious slights of any kind are absolutely not tolerated, nor are slights against other groups based on sexual orientation, age, class, IQ, ethnicity or similar features.
Please take special note of this one also. These forums can be read by anyone around the world. Twice yesterday I had to PM members who had dropped derogatory terms into their posts. The long and the short of it is that none of us knows who may read our posts so we all need to show a certain level of respect for all the people who use our forums.

Yes, thats true. I have seen much of this so called bad behavior going on first hand. Its ridiculous, we are all mature here, lets not make the mods work any harder than they already have to work. Lets keep our discussion civil. No personal attacks or flamebaiting. Thanks.

It's only been 30 minutes since the last post, but I don't think the bumping of this thread can get too frequent given the recent nature of this forum.
Great thread Paul, Thank you.
LOL, I love this thread. I dont visit the video/sound section of the forums nearly as much as I used to because it seems to have turned into a place to either start or jump into an argument. It is not the informative place that it used to be. Dont get me wrong, there is still plenty of information to be had here, but you have to do an awful lot of weeding to get to it. Bump for the thread, its one of the best that I have read on this section in quite awhile. ;)

I'm glad to see this thread appear. People trying to calm things by example hasn't seemed to work so well lately, and the types of threads commonly seen here as of late the past few months goes so far as to bring the rest of the forum to a lower level. It pushes people away when they see the type of things happening here.
Flaming never solves anything. It can only go to hurt people, and the poster's reputation, if any. Let us return this forum to the standards shown in other sections of this place.
Bump-zilla!
Remember, this is a G-Rated forum. If you wouldn't tell your mom how the R420 (or NV40) is going to pwnz0rs with the language you use, tone it back :)
Also remember that everybody here is human. We're all subject to errors, bias, and misinterpretation. Attack the issue (preferably with links to back yourself up), not the person who got the issue "wrong".

It will be nice to see these parts conducted a little more civily. I know i come here for the knowllege base of this forum. people bickering and flaming all over the place kind of works against the delivery of that knowllege.

This thread made it to the third page when I did a search for all new posts this morning- time to move it back up. :)
One of the things I have always liked the MOST about these forums is the fact that while disagreements happen often, people can usually "agree to disagree" even if they can't find conclusive proof on a given topic.
Flaming and personal attacks are NOT the conclusive proof that changes peoples minds. ;)

We have alot of newcomers here recently and if they see that kind of behaviour or language from long term memebers then we can't really complain when they start mimicking.
The reason why I and alot of others come her is because of the house rules... I like not having to read through pages of profanity just to get an idea of the problem or situation why do alot of you feel the urge to swear? You can get your point across equally well without them.

One of the problems I see with stickying anything is that even if you make the title all caps, it doesn't stand out much from the other stickies, and since there are already quite a few, I think that another would be noticed even less.
Eh, that's just my thoughts on it, though.
what happened over in cooling that forced the stickies into a seperate forum?
Im sure you could find a way to put this at the very top of the list too, kind of like the rules. of course. i guess we wouldnt be here if people were actully reading that thread ^^;;
Actually, the rules are in an announcement. The Cooling stickies are in an entirely different forum of their own, because there were sooooooo many.

So did you here about the ATI Execs infedelity? (interest peaker)

04-30-04, 04:03 PM
The basis of the anti-sticky thing is the assumption that most people looking through the forum are either looking for a thread to answer questions in so they overlook the stickies, or they are conditioned to being used to seeing the stickies, and automatically, (almost subconciously) look to the first thread below them.
I know coming here a few times every day, I don't check out the stickies every time I enter the forum... I couldn't tell you the name of any more than maybe even 2 stickies on the entire forum, and there are probably close to 30 current ones.
Bumping also has the advantage of being a tangible display of member constitution - it shows that the thread holds current importance to our forum values, and members are actively engaged in confronting the issue.
NTM, bumping is more fun, just watch...

Which is completely against the point. The point is to let people know the rules will be strictly enforced. Spamming, which is against the rules, contradicts this. The only reason it's being bumped is to let all those who don't read the stickies regularly see it.

They threatened to dislodge new posts to the second page, so a seperate cooling sticky section was made. I recently went back over the stickies in H2O, I've found most of them are still worthy of being stuck. If anyone has something they want to add to those (or thinks that some are no longer relavent) you all know where my PM box is.

The easiest way to solve the problem with the current "heated" debates in this part of the forum is to tell nvidia and ati to start making identical cards with the same specs...

yep...bumping is kinda the same as spamming....moving a thread rapidly to the top or flooding useless info into a thread and/or multiple threads. That is how I define it.
Does it matter what my post does in an already pretty much useless thread?
useless in terms of many of the posts(not the origional), some are pretty good, most are bumps and contribute nothing at all except for the bumping of the thread. What does it matter whether I post
bump
or
bump blah blah balh blah blah blah
I am not arguing here, just stating my opinion. I have nothing more to add, and there is no nead to turn this thread into anything else other than its origional topic or the bumps so I have said what I have to say.
EDIT: now that I think of it, I guess you are right, it was an attempt at some slight humor oh how I sometimes ramble on and on and some of the simplest things. Oh well. I cannot fix the past, but now I know. Thanks for your opinion.
Cheers!

The idea of bumping is to move it up in the forum, to make it more visable. Bumping it only 8 minutes after the previous one isn't really making it that much more visible, especially if the post has not imput other than bumping the thread.
(read: that practically equates to spam)
Just my opinion though.

But just to get this clear, It seems that if you disagree with a post and do it in a nice manner you still Get a warning or something to that effect. Is it alright to dissagree, or do we have to wear blinders and Blindly agree with a post? No matter how false or missleading it may be?

No, if you're polite, you likely won't get a warning. If you respond with "you don't belong here, you're being a jerk, ...," it's another story. One's a case of politely stating your opinion and preferably linking to relevant policies, and is respectful. The other is an act of escalation, even if well-intentioned. -- Paul

Release time of a new video card is invariably a time of higher tension around the video forum, when all the fanboys come out to frolic - that is all he meant. I know that Voodoo Rufus meant this regardless of creed or denomination. ;) (it wasn't a statement about ATI or Nvidia)
I think it was a good idea to restate the rules that are already in place because obviously people have not been following them.
On a similar note, is it just me being old fashioned or whatever but does it seem like some avatars aren't very wholesome. What I mean is, I was on another forum a while ago and there were some scantily clad avatars that don't fit the G Rating.

After re-reading this thread once or twice, and then forum surfing.. It's all about passion.. I'm in the customer service world, and learning decorum with an obtuse customer who is obviously wrong (at least in my eyes) is critical to my companies success. The same applies here.. we all have opinions, I like AMD CPU's, you may not. We can have a lively adult exchange of opinions, within forum guidlines, and still get our feelings known. But sometimes I can see people getting passionate about it.. or at least mad.. but we all have to remember what they say about opinions...

I just saw this thread because of all the bumpage going on and I must say that I am very surprised.
First of all, I have to say that I haven't been visiting this forum frequently lately so I probably don't know some things that most of you do. Every time I visit however, I always run into very friendly, helpful and humorous people. I love this forum (it's my favorite forum) mostly because I like the people hanging around here. Now, I am not a member of too many forums but I have been around a few and my opinion is that we have the nicest and the politest people around here.
This thread as a result comes to me as a big surprise. I can assure you that I am against flaming and flame-baiting as much as you guys but I didn't think that there was much of this going on around here.
We always have a whole bunch of X company vs. Y company discussions here (*sigh* yeah, I know it's almost always nVidia vs. ATI around here and this is really getting old and boring as it goes on and even the old timers and passionate people started to drop out of threads that head in that direction) but while these arguments usually result in people agreeing to disagree (or sometimes people just disagreeing on everything period), I rarely run into threads that turn into pure flame fests.
Every once in a while, someone will get frustrated trying to get his point across and use a swear word or two but these words are rarely (if ever) directed at a person posting in that thread.
I don't know. I am sure you guys have a point here otherwise I think you wouldn't spend all this effort bumping up this thread but I just wanted to put in my 2 cents as well and say that I love this forum and I think that it is better than most forums (if not all) that I have run into, at least in terms of being friendly and helpful.
Flaming usually isn't the only problem with forums either. There are some forums on the web where most members consider themselves elite and therefore above the rest and either humiliate newcomers to try to prove their superiority or just make fun of them for their amusement. In these kind of environments, flaming would usually be a blessing if it came with some help because the members that consider themselves elite provide no help at all.
Fortunately, I have not seen any kind of this behaviour I talked above here but then again, I have not run into many threads here that turn into flame fests period. :)

bump!!!
well the debate between ATi and nVidia is so heated because basically the two companies are on par with each other for this next round. ATi has a very fast card coming out, and nVidia has impressed many people with its feature enriched top card as well. both of these companies have been on top, and now its for the most part going to be a decision based upon budget. nonetheless, GREAT for smart consumers. great for fanboys too i guess cuz you cant really go wrong this round.
kinda rambling, but when two companies like this are very close, fanboys get angry and find more ways to argue their company is better since its not as clear.
its different than the Intel versus AMD dispute, because intel users are happy with the higher speeds for multitask, editing, and gaming, and AMD users are happy for value, efficiency, and gaming.

Intel isn't faster for gaming and editting though... I might give them multitasking though, due to HT.
Let me be clear on something: There is no validating that will be accepted. In otherwords, there is no "Well I dumped all over product X and those who use/prefer it but it's acceptable because..." When that gets said, I stop reading at "Well I dumped all over product X and those who use/prefer it" and then the person who posted it gets warned or banned.

Guys,
The purpose of this thread is not to rehash the processor wars or the graphics card wars. The bumpage is good but there are other places on the forums for those discussions.

Why not simply call the thread "READ OR DIE" or, alternatively, "OMG NEW RADEON 99900Billion!1one" ?

Because its thread spamming and its against forum policy and in turn against what this thread is trying to accomplish.

I haven't been to the forums for a while and I am not commonly in the Video section anyways. However, I did find this thread a welcome addition (although, it was dancing into a whole lot of different areas at times), and I have my two cents to add...
What most people seem to be forgetting is the purpose of this forums, which is for computer users to ask for assistance and to help others. For a long time, I had a Voodoo 3 in my main rig until fall 2002, and then I had an Nvidia Geforce 3 clear up till Black Friday 2003. If I needed help, I would expect somebody who knows the information to help me out, even though I may not be running a video card from one of the two main manufacturers. In turn, I would try my best to help somebody out even though I personally do not prefer that company. This isn't a fight about what company is the best, it is computer users helping each other out, that point has to be remembered.
While discussions about what component is the best can and will come up from time to time, those discussions should be about the facts. Once again, it is computer users helping each other out, not people trying to establish leet pride in what they bought and to put down other people who didn't buy their specific components. For one reason or another I may have bought my components, such as the ATI card I now have I run only because of Black Friday. Comparison discussions should exist to help me know about the advantages one card has over another as well as the weaknesses, so that I can purhcase an appropriate card.
Overall, the goal is for computer users to help out fellow users. Trying to be superior to others and to put down inferior users should never be a goal here. Also, putting down something that you hate should not be a goal either.
I always expect the members of this forum to be helpful to me and I will do my very best to be helpful back. As long as the main reason as to why we are all here is remembered, then everybody should have an awesome time here.
Eitherways, my two cents is over. Just wanted to let everybody know what I thought on this issue...

We could but then there would be two announcements that say the same thing. One clean and the other spammed to the point that all our real discussion in here is hiding in the static.

i dont know. the argument that "anyone can read this website" is kinda flaky to say the least. if a two year old googles "certain" pictures, that means the parent should be monitoring the kid, not that google is doing a terrible thing. as for being innapropriate, i think that sometimes its enforced too strictly in some parts and not enough in others. when it goes into the grey and is more opinion than anything, i often see this forum fall into the "everyone else leans towards idea A, so idea B is innapropriate". whenever i posted a "innapropriate" thread i dont feel it is innapropriate. sometimes i cross the line without even realizing it i guess. heh most of the time it gets edited and i dont even know about it :P. i mean yes, this is for techies to discuss technology but when things get in the grey area (mainly the off topic section) i feel that the "innapropriate" tag gets placed where people just have differing opinions not an objection to the appropriateness. i get pushed in the situation where people dont want to speak up, but they agree with what i have to say. youre right that no one reads the stickies but not many people realize how this affects how we post. i guess i will prolly get flamed for being the punk that goes up against the guys that "work so hard to keep this place working" but i must give my honest opinion. it is a decent place to post but its far from perfect. "giving ultimatims is no way to manage a relationship" *quote from dr. ruth* :D
but i do understand your frustration on the flaming thing. name-calling is stupid and should be done away with.

I think maybe changing the title of the thread, and changing it every week to something everyone will want to read. That way they don't know what's in it until they click on it. After opening the thread and seeing it's the same "boring" one time and again, maybe they'll get tired of seeing it and just read it. Then they'll think over what they're doing wrong.

The problem with using titles that are misleading to draw people into the thread is that once they realized that this thread wasn't really about whatever the draw title was they would just leave. Too bad you can't somehow make people read the stickies before they are allowed to post in a section :/
No one has posted in this for over a month, I suppose since it became a sticky :(

uh no

Well, a pop-up would be cool, but the idea around here is that the members are responsible for knowing the rules and having read the stickies. Accordingly, if somebody has broken the rules in a sticky, they're accountable whether they have read it or not.
That having been said, this thread was created during a particularly nasty time in this subforum. Flame wars and such were occurring much more than they should have, and it became necessary to provide a very bold warning and request for better practices by all. Lately, things, have been much better. So, there's really no need for such a pop-up window. But keeping this as a sticky provides a good reminder to look through from time to time. :)
Thanks! -- Paul

S%#%! Did I curse? Seriously, it is good to have a friendly atmosphere in here as it encourages people to ask questions, even dumb ones like mine. I have posted at other forums and been verbally assaulted by people for no good reason. I'm happy to say people are a heck of a lot nicer in here. (Oops, I just had to edit that heck!)

Agreed. The last time I really have been around this section was around the time when this thread was created. I was just thinking the other day that it is improved drastically in here. It really is a nice feeling to come in here and not see out of line posts, especially ones towards those who are new and really do not and cannot know any better. This is what OCforums is about and let's keep it this way! I have been part of countless forums that were probably ten times worse than the situation in here when this thread needed to be created. Experiences like those make OCforums an even more special place. :) Ok..I'm done back to overclocking.

Not here often, bump. Stickies are my friend. More info then in a box of toasted wheaties. Cause I would have been an idiot and KIllled my a8n without stickies.
Now folks , dont forget how easy it is to set up another account and flame every AMD using Linux luvin fanboy online. This is a problem even at the Microsoft Partner site, if your there to research a dx runtime issue or prep for certifications you will run into flame wars, rude behavior, and links to porn sites, however the moderators there are just as fast to pull a post or remove a thread and all of this from Microsoft Certified Professionals. I use the OC forums membership in my resume, as well as links to the futuremark database. Thats why I like to keep things clean. However I understand what its like to "{chastised}" online by a Microsoft Certified Professional who moderates and refuses to believe an issue could be hardware related and not software related.......
