You should not run unsupported resolutions as you may damage your monitor and it will likely not display correctly. Stick to whichever res you are comfortable viewing at and the highest refresh rate it supports.

Ok, I thought that it might be that for the highest performance you need to stick with what is recomended, but like with over clocking it is ok to go high, but just not as much stability.
Running your monitor at higher than the recommended refresh rate can cause serious damage, but there are certain monitors that can run higher refresh rates than what they state in the manual/options without any problems so i've been told. Theres a certain old Dell Trinitron, cant remember the model, but the dealer i bought my monitor off said he'd had a few reports back off ppl saying they'd been able to run it at higher than stated supported refresh rates and had no problems at all. Its not really advisable, but then again, neithers overclocking...
If you do decide to try and run your monitor at a higher refresh rate, as soon as you see any problems just switch the monitor off straight away and wait about 20 seconds. Windows XP will switch back to the old refresh rate after 15 seconds if you dont confirm to keep the new refresh rate, this will minimize the chance of any damage.
But remember...you really are running a risk of screwing up your monitor even if it appears to be fine at an unsupported refresh rate. It depends on whether your prepared to take the risk, and the having to shell out for a new monitor of it goes...Running monitors at ""Overclocked" refresh rates isnt something i've really had any experience of personally. I'm sureif you did a search on google you could come up with some good information on the subject.
