Is there anyone out there with a Coolscan III thats managed to connect it to a Windows XP system ?
Have just bought a USB to SCSI2 interface from Adaptec (USB2Xchange) to enable me to continue using my Coolscan with my new PC, and spent approx 5 hours last night failing to get it working having searched more Google articles than i care to count.
It seems under W2K and XP there can be a problem with the Scanner not being recognised - Unable to find any active devices - message is issued by the Scanner software.
Things I've tried -
Installing ASPI from the Adaptec website, versions 4.71.2, 4.71.1, 4.70 and 4.6
Installing, De-installing and re-installing the Scanner software (Nikon Scan 3.1.2).
Checked the drivers for the Adaptec USB2Xchange - the most recent (May 2002) version came with it.
And re-booted countless times too (trying things like switching the Scanner on with the PC on, or off, etc.)

Any ideas anyone ?

The resolution to this was to return the USB adapter and buy an Adaptec Ava-2904 Card instead and all worked fine almost immediately.

The newer USB to SCSI cards will not work with the older Coolscan III that i have according to Nikon.
