All of my jpegs and mp3s have recently had a .vbs (visual basic script) extension added to them. I think it happened while I was downloading things off morpheus and opened a file to hear it. it has taken over the files and I can't look at the mp3s or jpegs. Do you think it could be a virus. an example is ____.jpg.vbs
I really need to get rid of this stuff. Anyone got any ideas? I need my pics and music back!!!!!!

Yep, you downloaded a virus all right.
You should scan everything you get off of the net. Especially, something like Morpheus.
Pick up a copy of Norton Antivirus and download the latest updates.

That's what I was afraid of. Seems like a stupid virus to me. Will Norton get rid of it?

Download the latest updates and hope that Norton can repair them

okay thanks for the help
If not, you can try and manually remove the second extension. If your MP3 and JPG collection is anything like mine, that would be a major undertaking, and really suck. So good luck with it.

It is a varient of the loveletter virus. I ran norton virus scan and it wasn't able to repair it. How would I go about manually moving the .vbs extension. There a few pics that I really need. I don't care about the mp3s.
Go into Windows Explorer, or My Computer, if you prefer, click on the file, press F2, and remove the .vbs. No guarantees on this working, but give it a go.

Alright. i'll try that now.
OK...here's my attempt at OLD TIME DOS:
Try this first on an expendable file before using the all (*) key...
I would try to rename all the files at one shot in DOS:
try this and see if it works...(i'll use alan.mp3.vbs as file for example)
for one file in dos prompt type:
ren alan.mp3.vbs alan.mp3
to do all try:
ren *.mp3.vbs *.mp3

After running virus scan and trying to fix it something got messed up and I can't get into windows. I will try the dos thing. I was thinking, and the jpegs I need are on my site (the site logo). I don't really need the things on that hdd as much as I thought but it would have been nice to have some of it. I think I will just reformat when I get my new setup. For now I am using another hdd that has windows on it but it isn't in a computer. It's in case something like this happens I wil still be able to use my puter

I decided that I wasn't going to try and fix the problem and I remembered I had a bunch of scanned bitmaps that I was going to put on my site. I need those bad. It took forever to scan scan them all. So I set the messed up hdd as slave and the one I'm using to master and I was able to explore the hdd with the virus. I got the stuff I needed and I am going to reformat it. Thanks for the help guys. I appreciate it.
STUPID LOVELETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!
OK, I haven't messed with viruses or anything, so call me stupid, but....
Couldn't you just create a new file association for the .mp3.vbs and .jpg.vbs files? Go into the View menu in My Computer and click on Folder Options to do this. It would make sense to me to do this, 'cuz then you can open the files and use them still. Look under .mp3 and .jpg for the exact options you need, but change the extension to whatever it is and the .vbs. When you kill the virus, you can simply delete the association.
Of course I don't know if the virus spreads through opening the file or not... That's why I put the disclamer at the begining. You could also double click on the files and when the "Open With" dialog box comes up, click on whatever you use to open the file and click the allways open with this program or whatever it is.

BAD IDEA!
Don't double click a virus...that's just what it wants. If you already have vbs (I think that's a visual basic script) associated to run...you're screwed. If you hold shift and right click the file you should get an "Open With..." option...

I've tried the open with option, but that doesn't work. It's like the data in the files is taken away. When I was trying to fix it with norton, it just ended up giving me a bunch of errors when I rebooted and The screen froze. It was like I overloaded the computer withoughht doing anything. I am juast going to reformat. I have gotten all of the files I need. I saved all my pics as jpeg and bitmap so i was able to get the bitmaps.
