I am a bit undecided about this two LCDs, the NEC1760NX and the ViewSonic VP171B.
Can anyone provide any suggestions from personal experience on which is the better choice?

I was once in the same boat as you are. I now have the NEC1760NX, and I love it, way better for my eyes than my old crt. Gaming is also incredible in these LCD. The only different from the VP171B and NEC1760NX is the option to adjust the monitor up or down, pivot, a little slimmer bezel and 50 more contrast(correct me if I'm wrong).
So far that is all can remember between the two. After looking at my friend VP171B, the picture is pretty much exactly like the same as the NEC1760NX.
I got my LCD brand new for $400 ship. To me it's not worth for me to spend and extra $100 to get the VP171B over this 1760NX for only a few spec different.
Good luck with choosing the right monitor for you, you can't go wrong with either the two. It's the matter of spending more for the Viewsonic.

I also am an owner of the NEC one and I love it as well. Great for gaming too! I got mine for $389 shipped free from Newegg around September. The only thing it is lacking is a DVI connection, but that really isn't that big of a deal. Hope you are happy with whatever you wind up with though. Good luck!

Which one do you have? 1760nx or 1760v. The 1760nx comes with DVI connection, I have mine hook up using DVI-D cable right now.
