I've had an old computer (AMD K-6, 28MB RAM) running Win 98 for a while, but it got so cluttered up with programs that I decided to reinstall. I formatted, reinstalled, and everything seemed fine except for my monitor: it's stuck at 640x480 and 16 colors (it's capable of 1024x768 and 16.7 million colors). My monitor is a Compaq 1525, 15", but I can't find the drivers in Microsoft's supplied drivers thing. I decided to go with "generic 1024x768", but it still doesn't go over 640x480 . I've tried at least 5 different selections under their supplied monitor drivers, but no matter which driver I load nothing changes. Also, I think 640x480 and 16 colors is the most a computer can display without a video card, so I tried to fix my vid card, but it's detected and (according to windows) working fine. I know there's some way to get it working (I had it at 1024x768 before I reinstalled), but windows is not cooperating :(. Please help...

I found a driver for this monitor at www.driverguide.com. You'll have to make an account for this website, but it's free, and very useful.

You did install video card drivers didn't you? I ran into that before. A friend had reinstalled everything and was stuck at 640.480 for some reason. Found out that he forgot to install the video card drivers.
