I ahve been doing research for about a month now on what monitor to buy and I have narrowed it down to these.

and

Money is not an issue at this point.

I am leaning towards the more expensive FE991SB because of the SuperBright technology which is explained here:

http://www.necmitsubishi.com/products/technologies/detail.cfm?documentFamily_id=138&division=NEC

That, as far as i know, is the only difference in the 2 monitors (asside from price)

Also, in some of the reviews I have read some people talk about seeing thin lines of the grill (on the FE991SB) but im guessing its only an unlucky few that got those.

So far I think im going to go for the less expensive monitor unless someone tells me that the SuperBright thing is REALLY worth it.

Thank you for all your help guys.

i have a 991. the difference lies in the tube. the 991 has an aperature grill tube while the 990 has a shadowmask tube. aperature grill tubes are generally better than shadowmask tubes. the aperarture grill DIAMONDTRON is COMPLETELY flat while the 990' shadowmask may or may not. the superbright function on the 991 is nothing more than a present brighter setting (i think). it's nice for DVDs and games but didn't make or break my purchase decision.

ALL aperature grill tube monitors have 2 horizontal lines running across the montior. they're VERY faint and very small and can really only be seen on light backgrounds. they're actually two small wires that run the length of the tube.

also, if you're interested in getting a better deal, i got mine from dell for $190 shipped. just gotta wait a little while till you find a few coupons that stack.

aim at torchedlh if you wanna talk more.

I had a great conversation with torchedlh and now im pretty much going to go with the 991.

Last question though, what about the dot pitch? Its not that great on the more expensive one but better on the cheaper one. Is there really that much of a visual difference?

I've never seen the 991 but I just got my FE990 and I think it is perfect. Flat, bright, and sharp. 1280x1024 @85hz( monitor will go to higher res. but I like it at this setting). Naviset software is a breeze to get things tweaked just-so.
Got mine from Gateway $236 with free shipping.

I too have the FE990, and I love it. Everything is razor sharp. I looked at the FE991 also, but aperature grille monitors bother me with the two lines at the top & bottom.

The FE990 and the FE991 are both great monitors and will serve you well. It's just what technology you prefer.

my dad has a 991, and well... i just went over to look at it, and its damn BEAUTIFUL

the two lines are so thin the only time they're noticable is with a white background, wouldn't bother me at all

compared to my old KDS VS-195e 19" that looks like its round, its like night and day
