I have narrowed it down to three monitors to replace an aging 19" Viewsonic.
Monitor 1:
Viewsonic VP171b 17" LCD
response time: 16 ms
resolution: 1280x1024
contrast: 500:1
Monitor 2:
Viewsonic P95f+B 19" CRT
http://www.viewsonic.com/products/crt_p95fplusb.htm for more info that and I really don't feel like typing it all in.
Monitor 3:
Mitsubishi 19" CRT DP930SB-BK

I plan on using this monitor for gaming and some photo work. I like the idea of an LCD but I am still not sure if the technology is there for perfect gaming. I did read the sticky about LCDs and gaming but that did not help. I really need help on this matter since I don't want to rush out and buy an LCD and be disapointed in the end results.

A 500:1 contrast ratio is high. LCD's can no doubt be a lot brighter than standard CRT's. If space isn't an issue, a CRT gives more options w/ refresh rates and higher resolutions. I love my LCD though, and I think the graphics are just as good.

I'm facing this same issue right now and I think I'm going to go with the P95F that you mentioned. The contrast on the LCD monitors is still just too low, hopefully they'll be a lot higher in another year or two, and cheaper by then as well.
i would still get a CRT for now because i think LCD's don't have enough resolution and suffer from too much ghosting

Well I don't find resolution to be a problem with them, as 1280x960 on an 18" or so is good enough for me (although you still have the problem with the LCD monitors being native 1280x1024 instead of 1280x960). It's more a problem of being stuck with using one resolution (I run different games in different resolutions depending on the performance level). Also, ghosting doesn't seem to be a problem anymore if the response time is 16ms.

I like the refresh rates of CRT’s better this will make better gaming.
But if you are moving it around a lot CRT’s are heavier.
CRT’s still look better and I like them best:)

flatscreen CRT
I have never liked the picture on LCDs evn the new ones don't have the greatest viewing angles, plus you can get dead pixels and they are more expensive. unlesss this is a major LAN machine go for CRT the only advantages I think of LCD are size and weight

LCD's look better sitting on a desk, and for internet applications and just regular usage they have a better looking picture. but when you put on a movie or start playing a game thats when they start crapping out on you. dont get the 16ms panel because it does a poor job of distinguishing greys from black. i would hold out for as long as possible on the LCDs. i was gonna buy one for christmas but i'm holding out. 12-16ms with true colors will soon be here, and i'll be happy.

Without going into details as the technology stands today, I have a LCD and would never go back to CRT.
I am sure something will come out down the road that will blow both of them away.
