I took a look at the thread about lcd monitors, and I learned a lot from it, but I'm still lost. I've been asking other people, but usually all I get is "I've been looking at this for a long time, and I'm gonna buy it soon" responses. Right now, I'm using a Viewsonic a90f+ "ultrabrite" and its pretty good. Though, its huge, heavy, and if I stare at it for more than a few hours it hurts me eyes. What I'm looking for is a 17" lcd that (would be nice, but certainly dont need it) could be mounted on a wall, and is good for gaming and reading... I should have around 600 to spend on a monitor around the 7th. any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

i've been looking at these two:

HITACHI CML174SXWB 17" Black LCD MONITOR - RETAIL
NEC MultiSync 1760NXBK-1 17" LCD Black Monitor - Retail

but when I posted on another forum, people shot both of them down and didn't give me much info on why or any suggestions that were better. so if anybody has any experience with either of these, lmk!

anyway - thanks for any help :)

I personally went through all the same thing when buying my Sony LCD... I got advice, read reviews and specifications and they were of little use to me... Eventually I went and viewed some of the products at various stores, if the salesman does not wish to show you the product then it is obvious that they do not require your custom.
I personally found that some LCD's were overbright while others had strange shadows and this had little to do with the specification or company producing them. Some of the expensive models were no better than cheaper products imho..
I eventually settled for a Sony as it suits my requirements really well and is sharp while not hard on the eyes... its also got nice accessible controls.

I would personally suggest that you ignore what people reccomend and go and look for yourself.. no LCD is created equal and we all use different eyes to view them... Having said that the Sonys worth looking at :p

I think most LCDs can be mounted on a wall with a "VESA mount" (check for it in the specifications) but the actual wall mount bracketing will cost extra. A good wall mount will probably run close to $100. I comtemplated getting a VESA mount, but I was looking for a desk mount swing arm design, and those run up to $200. Just google up "VESA LCD wall mount" and you should get a large list of places that either make them or sell them. Good luck with your LCD hunt!

I know a problem with getting reccommendations on forums is the "If you're gonna spend $XXX why not throw in $XX to get a better model" and that logic just seems to go on forever until you're getting a $3746 monitor. I tend to take any forum reccommendations with a grain of salt. Rather, look for people who've posted their experiences with a product they've actually bought. As far as I know, MANY people have that Hitachi LCD and are pleased with it. My friend bought the NEC model and enjoys it greatly. I would still suggest you investigate on your own at a CompUSA/BestBuy/CC/Microcenter, whatever, and get an idea of what you want better.

I would do that, but im 300 miles from any form of computer store. Thanks, though. I'm glad you guys understand about the never ending "why not look at this one instead" replies :) It really sucks not being able to go check out the stuff for myself, maybe i'll have to take a trip up to anchorage and look around.

I have the Hitachi and it is wonderful. It is soo much crisper and vibrant than my old crt. The colors do seem to be a little darker than neutral overall(not necessarily a bad thing). When I looked into getting an LCD this seemed to be THE screen to get. I'm wondering what negative comments were said about it because it is the best monitor I have ever used.

I've used the NEC 1760v. Very nice. Look for something with a 16ms response time, .264 dot pitch, and a contrast ratio of at least 400:1 and you should be ok. 600 bucks should get you an excellent monitor.
