Monitor drivers needed?

hi,
I've never noticed this till just recently. i cant go to 1280x1024 on windows xp with my nec fe 700. The monitor is rated to work up to 1280x1024. i can do it on my other comps with me and 98.
i have tried reloading the drivers many times for my 9800 pro.
sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Ive tried underclocking, stock, and overclock, the video almost never let me go to 1280x1024. i notice that on the display window there are lots of ticks when i cant and only a few clicks when i can.

I always thought the all monitors made after 97 were plug and play. But, it is an older monitor, is it possible i need to find the drivers for it? i am reluctant to try monitor drivers since nec doesnt have digitally signed drivers for this model.

Any insight on my weird problem is appreciated.

I've never had monitors drivers cause a problem in any system I've worked on. They really aren't even drivers. Basicaly it just a list of resolutions and refresh rates that the monitor can handle and a few other bit of into. Just install them and don't worry about it.
