I should listen to my own advice...
I just finished building an awsome heatsink that works off of the underfan of my powersupply (really cool idea) for maximum quiteness. I wanted to install it right away, so I hastily took the only HS off, and slopped the new one on...
I plugged everything back in, and turned it on, and 4 seconds later it turned right back off again...
So after much troubleshooting, I closely inspect my CPU and see that one litttle itty bitty corner is missing. Booo....
So tomorrow i'm going to have a buy a new one... and we'll see how that goes... I'm still going to use my homebuilt HS, but I think i'll adjust the clip to make it a little looser this time...
Would a shim prevent this from happening again?
Thanks,
Will.
sorry to hear that man! thats why i'm nervous to take off my slk-900u to clean it and reapply some AS3...i dont wanna "f" anything up...

A shim would help prevent things like that happening but would also raise cpu temps slightly.
true
I just reapply AS3 and my swiftech stick with my P4, I am scared if there will be bent pins, but luckily, it is not.

:p I came to this conclusion when i was 9 and breaking everything in sight because i was trying to "tweak" it
Then later in life (13) i discovered that this isn't true

Man if I could only leave stuff alone when it was working fine. My 0310 1700+ JIUHB CPU is dead thanks to me NOT following that rule. It was working quite well at 2.4GHz in my Abit NF7-S (which I got after I killed an ASUS trying to push it further). But no.... can't have it JUST working fine. I had to mess with it. BAM!!! Its toast.... Its dead and is sitting on top of my monitor to forever remind me of this rule. It has a horrible burn mark on it, similar to an open wound, and the dryed up AS3 is smeared all over it, representing the blood stains over its mutilated dead corps.
Anyways, the moral of the story is.... just like the title says....

You'd think i'd learn after the first one...
So after I bought another one, and re-adjusted my heatsink, I tried it on the new one... CRACK...
I dont' think i'll be trying it out any time soon. Good thing its a small corner off of the chip, not really noticeable to the naked eye, and I think i'll be able to exchange it for a new one (Which i'll be using a "real" heatsink for. I'm going to post some pics of my HS, so you can see how cool it is, and how awsome it would be if it worked.

sorry to hear that it happened again for you.
But people, let's just give in to this!! it's in our nature to mess with things and maybe not even "tweak' sometimes just to see "how"!! I broke a nice good working and 6 month old laptop by opening it up and seeing what exactly was inside.
We just can't help it, and with the prices they are nowadays it's not going to bankrupt you to make a new pc either.
I feel for ya, but it's the nature of the beast LOL

Wow. That stinks that your heatsink doesn't work. But, as I was reading this thread...I read that a shim will raise temps. IS this true? I got one to help w/temps. I also put thermal grease between it and the HS. Was this a bad idea? I'm OCing a 2600+ to 2.27GHz
Once again I take the cake; I killed a Sapphire 9800 trying to put ramsinks on it, on memory that already overclocked awesome. Not to mention breaking my pump trying to quiet it down. Btw, bigggwilly, your homemade HSF solution sounds very interesting. Got any pics?

I wanted a better O/C on my GF@MX400 so I took the heatsink off and killed the card at the same time

Dude, I totally can't hear you. La la la la la I'm not listening.
Also, the whole "When something works, don't touch it" rule is sorta the antithesis of this website's philosophy.
