Hiya I recently put together a new computer with the following specs:

Athlon 3000(333fsb)
Asus A7n8x (revision 2.0 with support for 200fsb)
1gig Corsair XMS 3200 Matched Pair
Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 256mb
Windows XP, DX9

I just realized (after purchasing the 333fsb version) that running the system asynchronously is costing me quite a bit of performance. I recently upped the FSB to 200mhz and dropped the Multiplier to 11 and saw about 10%-15% improvement on my system... The question I have is it safe to run the chip at 400fsb as long as I ramp back the multiplier? As long as I keep the chip well coooled do I have to worry about anything? When I upped the FSB the temp went through the roof (using retail cooler), so I was planning on just upgrading my HSF (possibly a SLK800) and running the the system sync'd at 400mhz memory and 400mhz FSB to eke out that 10-15%.... Any input at all is appreciated!!!

You got a large temperature increase just by upping the front side bus a bit? Thats a bit strange. I've never gotten a temperature increase via fsb adjustment unless it was accompanied by adding to vcore. Not a large one anyway. I'd say get that slk and pump the fsb and vcore :) The 3000+ is a nice chip. Don't worry about its 333fsb rating too much. Even some old 100mhz fsb procs can do 200. Anyway, get that thing to 2.6ghz!

When I raise the FSB to 200mhz, do I need to raise the vcore at all? When is the point when you need to increase the voltage?

if you find it becomes slightly or completely unstable at a particular clock speed, find out whats unstable then give it more juice until your at your limit for a safe voltage for it :santa2:

Thanks for reply! Last question I was pondering is where can i find a a good guide about applying ASIII and installing the SLK800 in my system? Anything that supplements the instructions on Thermalright's website would be appreciated!

the arctic silver homepage will show you how to apply the AS3. On the compliment for the installation of the SLK-800u I would consider looking for reviews on google - I should imagine the majority will touch on the installation of the HS.

Ya its a nice system but kinda disappointed in the numbers its putting up, about 15400 3dmarks when i have the FSB at 400 (and slightly oc'd 200x11) but only around 14300 when I run it at stock speeds of 166x13... Anyone have any idea why these are so low, I plan on OC'n more once my SLK800 comes in the mail but it seems like the 3dmark numbers were a little low even before I am going to start OC'n... Anyone have any ideas or tips or tricks to boost performance??

what are your memory timings ??

up the fbs abit more leave the mulit at 11 intill its unstable then back it down alittle bit

DONT up the Vcore yet intill u get your slk-800 and btw what kind off fan u having with that ?

what drivers u using for your geforce and your chipset make sure u got all the lastest :)
