my friend is looking into a laptop for college, hes currently a multimedia student who primarily uses the following programs for projects: flash, dreamweaver, final cut pro (on apple only), photoshop, illustrator etc....and maya later on, other misc 3d programs.

hes looking at a g4 powerbook, and wants to know if it's worth the extra money compared to a higher clocked p4 laptop that is alot cheaper.

what are the disadvantages going with the g4 over the p4 books? also is there anything on the pc based systems that is comparable to final cut pro...besides adobe premier.

also what about performance? are 1ghz g4's comparable to a higher clocked p4?

thanks

my sister has a G4 powerbook and I must say I am jealous. I think she has one that is running at about 850mhz... Or something around that number, and my mom's laptop that has a celly running at 1.7 can't even begin to compare. Hopefully that will give you some leadway. Good luck. :)

I think the mac is better even though i am running a P4, but i will never forget the days of my Power PC 6500. I loved that computer but for those kind of tasks i think the mac would do fine, but i have no numbers so ehh.

isn't a p4 at twice the speed faster. than a g4 now since most of the companies have optimized the performance for the p4? atleast thats what i read a 2.4 p4 will trounce a 1.0 g4 in everything.

P4, no comparison. Or a Pentium M.

I haven't stepped into a design school in a couple years but I doubt things have changed that much. From what I last saw, the majority of computers that were being used for visual arts - at to a certain degree, Internet content - were still being run on Apple machines. I would say, if most of his classes are being taught on Apples, and if the computers in his labs tend to be Apples, it would probably be easier for him just to get a G4 laptop.

To me, a computer is more important as a tool. I don't really care if a P4 can do gaussian blur in half the time that the G4 can if I have to jump through hoops and spend hours trying to configure and run my apps on the PC.

method().man couldent of put it better. You cant compare the two and speed isnt everything, its part of the equation and to most its the major factor, but i dunno i think windows even xp isnrt as good as OS X. I mean when i had a mac(which was about 3-4 years ago) i found that you work much faster. Its alot easier to start and things arnt so complex. I know thats not good somtimes but even for macs there are your complex programs like photoshop and pro tools that the pros use. I think the macs can be more efficient at times Xp just has too much stuff sometimes which is its problem. But hey thats just me, if i had the cash id be mac all the way.

he and i are very aware that speed isnt everything...if you noticed, i asked about applications as well. if someone could address those questions. i think we got the power area covered :)

he is also worried about software costs. he already has most programs for pc apps that he will be using. and i dont think he wants to pay another 3-400$ for most programs out there if he chose a mac.

about the final cut pro and maya question? i have no idea but i'll ask this for him. is there a comparable software of final cut pro on pc's? also, is maya faster on a p4 system?

i was looking at dell's site for the new p4 m's...they look nice, alot of cache :)....and alot of cash :)

so what are your guy's opinions on the software area? i still need to ask if most of the comps will be pc/mac in the labs.

thanks again.

There's a whole forum for this kind of thing... http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?a=corfrm&s=50009562&q=Y&cf=48409524

If I were him I would go Pentium-M because it is based mostly off the P3 core with some of the P4 advantages like More cache SSE2 and others. IMHO I believe it is the best processor Intel has ever made for there speed to power ratio. And If price is not to heavy then sport for the 1.7 p-M, a gig of ram, ATi 9600m and a 7200rpm drive. That setup would waist a G4 in those programs.

OK from what ive seen (collages ive visited from high school) most collages have both so thats not a prob. I dont know about maya being faster but i thing adobe makes a good video editing program but im not sure.

yes i know. i was asking if there was something in comparison to final cut pro for the pc. so far i only know of adobe premeir.

i talked with my friend lastnight. he said the computers in the lab are all pc's. and thier is only 1 apple g4 workstation.

hes gettin a loan through his school (university of oregon)...that just adds to his total school loan (no monthly payments:)). im leaning towards the pentium m. 1mb of cache sounds nice :).

I hate that "Macs are twice as fast" garbage.

my dad does all of his adobe and video creation on a pc.. he went to school and had the choice of mac or pc and he tried both and he stuck with the pc. but anyways i don't think mac's are worth the extra penny and you have to pay to patch your os. but i'd have to say that mac's aren't faster anymore and haven't been for awhile. so no one better call me a mac lover bad enough my aunt is a mac freak.

oh and i put in the 2.4 killing the 1.0 cuz its the only thing i have heard about mac performance that wasn't biased all to hell as far as i know.
