I caught my little sister playing on my computer with magnet reeking havoc to my monitor. NOW i have little dark spots- is there any way i can get those to go away? I have a CTX 17in CRT. Any suggestions?

i dont think so...another reason to get a LCD...
Ive never had to deal with the newer ones getting a magnet too close, but Im pretty sure you should be able to deguass it and it should clear it up ok.
If that wouldnt work, Id turn it off for a lil while and let it power down pretty good, then turn it back on and see how it looks then.
Now, for the old TV's and old old monitors I would take the same magnet start where the colors were distorted the least, work around to the worst then slowly slide the magnet off the front of the monitor/TV around the side. Up and over off the actual screen.
I dont know what this would do to a newer model monitor, so be careful if you try this!

If internal degaussing circuits don't work a powerful AC magnet might stand a chance of making some repairs. It also might mess it up more, or corrupt data on your computer if you forget to move it far enough away.
I'm thinking something along the lines of a VCR tape erasing magnet.

I found this site on degausing. Now I know what it is all about.

I remember doing stuff like that to my tv when I was little, I just took the same magnet, held it further away and kind of moved it in larger and larger circles till it was gone, but I cannot say it will work.

i've got a "magic wand". It's basically an ac magnet, as donny_paycheck discribed. all you do is turn it on and wave it over the t.v/monitor. It works a treat.
the only other thing you can do is shut the monitor off for at least 6 hours.

My brother did this to my monitor a year ago. Panicked, and carefully using the magnet again, he managed to repair it. A steady hand and plenty of patience can solve your problem!

Did you try the built in degausser? Usually it's an option in the monitor's OSD, or a button on the front panel of the monitor.

i can't actually find the built in degausser- i don't have an OSD and there is not specific button for it.
I will check the website soon- its looking better though

As a little kid, I got a tool box for Christmas once. In it was a magnet about the size of a roll of quarters. It was quite strong. On more than one occassion I used it on the TV so I could look at all the really cool colors and patterns. Naturally I would get in trouble for this and my parents would have to call a repair man to come out and fix it. What confused me though was I got in trouble for putting a magnet to the screen yet when the repair man came out all he did was put a much bigger magnet to the screen that did the exact same thing mine did.

I put one of those "toll retreiver" magnents to my old monitor once. It came out with about 5 degause's.

Usually, if you don't have an OSD, and there isn't a button, the monitor will automatically degauss itself when you turn it on. Try turning it on and off a few times.

on my smaller monitor, if i hold the button on my soldering gun in and put the top of the gun towards the monitor, it waves around like degausing, and in fact degauses the monitor. on my newer one (with built in degause) it just messes it up. it might be worth a try if you have a soldering gun.
