View Full Version : I'm scared...

It's time to finally move from a CRT to an LCD. I wantd to get a 18" or even a 19", but it seems that 16ms response time isn't available in LCDs that large, so 17" it is. Now comes my problem...

I'd most likely be ordering it online, and I'm scared of gettiing one with dead pixels!!! :( I know that most of these places won't exchange it unless it has 5+ dead pixels, and I'm just worried about spending $400-$500 on an LCD that may be defective.

So...How many of you bought LCDs online recently, and how many received them free of dead pixels? (I'm hoping the majority) Of those that did have dead pixels...how many? Where you able to exchange it?

Maybe after enough responses I'll muster up the courage to order one...

Well, I don't think I quite meet your requirements, but I'll just give you some input.

I bought a Compaq TFT5000 LCD about 3 years ago online. It had one dead sub-pixel so I didn't exchange it.

Recently, I bought a Samsung 213T LCD from Best Buy and it doesn't have any dead pixels at all.

I think that most LCD makers or shops would exchange an LCD with 5 dead pixels. Any less, and it depends on the position of the dead pixels. For example, if there are 4 dead pixels clustered in the center of the screen, I'm pretty sure it can be exchanged. However, if the 4 pixels are on the corners of the LCD, an exchange would be less likely.

I bought my samsung 172t from newegg a few months back, and it came with no dead pixels. However, my ati 9700 pro did cause a dead pixel (on both my crt and lcd in the same place), so I rma'ed it for a new one. So even if you have a dead it could be your graphics card causing the problem.

How is that for gaming? I'm torn between it and the Benq FP767 or whatever the number is. They're both 16ms 17" displays. How do you like yours?

i like it a lot (mostly due to the higher resolution over my previous 15' LCD). it also turns pretty well from left to right (~75 degrees each way according to my protractor), although i wish it was capable of tilting backwards more (~30 degrees). the monitor is also pretty bright as well

as for ghosting, it's pretty hard to say considering i'm running a radeon aiw (based on the 7200 core, about as powerful as a gf2 mx), so i cant really generate high enough framerates to detect ghosting problems, but i would assume that with a 16ms response time, it shouldn't be a problem

Have you tried Dell yet? They are still running the promotion for the Dell 1800FP with 25% off which includes free shipping. I have the smae LCD and I really like the image it produces, but I do not game much. They have a great 30 day return policy instead of a dead pixel policy. The first one I bought from them had three "stuck" pixels and all I had to do was give them a call and they cross shipped one to me with them paying shipping both ways. Nothing extra out of pocket only my time to pack the old one to send back.

BenQ 17" owner here (FP767) and received mine for free UPS shipping through the mail, no dead pixels and games just fine.

I also use this as my primary television, movie, and music production display, and it's VERY easy on the eyes (not too bright or dark), and this is using the standard auto adjust features.

I reviewed the BenQ here (http://www.icrontic.com/index.php?module=reviews&&id=1063).

One thing you need to be prepared for--gaming at 1280x1024 requires a good video card with 128MB of memory if you want all the bells and whistles, otherwise you're going to struggle to maintain above 30fps.

Wow, that sounds great. I would love to not have to worry about dead pixels as opposed to ordering a NEC 17" and being stuck with it. Problem is, I'm a gamer and I really want that 16ms response time.

Hmmm......

Go and find some reviews of this Dell 1800FP LCD on other fourms and you will notice that a lot of oners of that particular Dell are gamers and are very happy with the response time. A majority have even said that the 1800FP looks better gaming (no ghosting) than the Dell 1900FP which is a rebadged Samsung 191T. BTW Dell is extending the 25% off sale on the 1800FP til 8/6/2003

hehe i am thinking the same thing :)

my current monitor really stinks... when i first turn it on, it takes it about 5 minutes to be readable... it is all blurry and then it slowly clears up... so annoying...

one reason i love lcd screens is that they seem to look bigger than they really are... (at least most of the dells that we had at school)

Actually, I think it's been changed so that there is no post limit for Cyber Deals. At the least, the limit has been lowered to 50 posts. BTW, how is that Dell for gaming? Is there any ghosting? Also, I bought my BenQ online, and no problems, I love it.

since its a 18" Monitor it is probably in the 25ms to 30ms range.

Alright, I'm thinking of going LCD too, but I have the same query as the guy that started this thread. I think you sorta answered it, but I'm slow, so redo it with me, k? If I do go LCD I'm going BenQ - my question you ask?

If I were to buy it, and it had even one dead pixel, would the super-BenQ Warranty fix that? I'm realy queasy about any imperfections in my screen.

Thanks folks!

To answer your 1st question where to buy.. I bought it at www.logicalplus.com for $369 free shipping should be here tomorrow or Thursday.

Your second question I am not to sure on what the warrenty covers it dosn't say anything about a dead pixile policy . So im guessing it means anything goes wrong with the monitor within the 3 year warrenty time period its coverd .. Thats me guessing not to sure I will have to take look and see if I can find what it covers.

Yea, I found the warrenty at the BenQ site, and searched on page for "pixel" nothing found, I even searched for "pix" incase I misspelled it. This is the ONLY thing keeping me from getting one, I even have the cash saved up and my 'rent's go ahead.

Other places that I have purchased parts from have *Must Have 8 dead pixels or more * before you can either return or get a refund. But most places will replace it if it has some dead pixels. You can contact logicalplus and see where they stand on the dead pixel issue.
