monitor is real dark

i just got a monitor from a friend and when i hooked it up it was real dark. so i maxed out brightness and contrast and it still looks ugly. my white isnt white, it is a dark ugly off white. is there anyway i could fix this? i tried powerstrip. it didnt work

I have heard that when the birghtness is highest and the monitor is still dark that the monitor is on its way out. Maybe its dying.

I have the monitor brightness set at "0" and its still to bright??
I never had this problem with my old Ti4600, black was black, now with this 9700pro, black is a dark grey??

any idea's.....

Usually it's not the video card, but in some cases re-installing the monitor in device manager (change to plug and play monitor if you can) and then reinstalling the vid drivers solves this.

The 9700 is certainly capable of producing superior graphics/2d, so unless the card's defective it aint that. I don't recommend making gamma adjustments (or any other driver-level adjusting), the default settings shouldn't be so bad that you'd come here asking wtf...
