CRT or LCD

I was wondering which monitor I should buy. I won't do so much gaming as graphic programs so I think that LCD is better for me. Is it also healthier for your eyes? I know it's more expensive but is it worth it. I read somewhere that the connection between your LCD and the graphics card for better image but it's not worth buying and LCD now since they will make something new soon that will boost the image quality far more. Any opinions are welcome.

-If your going to do things like CAD and the like, then an LCD would definatly be the way to go.

-LCDs are better for your eyes then a CRT but ,then again, buying a cheap $20 glare gaurd for the latter gets rid of most of that nasty radiation.

-From what I can tell, there really is no differance in quality between a DVI and standard VGA port output. Some guy in the forums stated that DVI has a longer signal then a VGA port, hence making it possible for an LCD to operate farther from a PC then a CRT.

Yea, I got both LCD and CRT. My eyes never get tired on the LCDs. And judging from what you will be doing, I think lcd will be the way to go.

I can recommend LCD. Although I do alot of gaming and never noticed anything adverse about it. And by LCD I assume you mean TFT variant?

you should take money in to consideration here as well

you can get almost a 19 inch crt for 199 and a 15 inch lcd for like 249

personly im holding out for some cheapers larger lcd's

The thing you have to remember about LCD's is you actually get the full 15, 17, 19, 20 etc inches.

Whereas on CRT's you don't get the "full" view.

I think a friend told me a 15" CRT was about the equivalent of a 17" CRT

Personall I haven't had a chance to compare them like that

Personall I haven't had a chance to compare them like that No, its like a 15inch CRT is 13.8 viewable the LCD 15inch is 15 inch so thats about 2 inches bigger than CRT. I'm going to buy the LCD. Aren't the 19 inch Viewsonics that cost 800$ TFT?

Placement of the monitor is another thing. Try not to put any light sources behind you, or anywhere that can be seen in the reflection of the monitor. Have a lit area (but not too bright) area around the monitor.

If you see glare on your monitor, it will give you headaches. If the area around/behind the monitor is too dark/bright then it will be hard on your eyes when they drift, and may also give you headaches.

here is a simple answer. if you game more than a little you want to get a CRT. if you are poor you want to get a CRT. if you game some and are not poor, get a sweet LCD with less than 25ms response time. if you just want to do regular old chat, email, wordprocessing and other un-game/graphics intensive things, get a LCD. if you want to give me money, buy me an LCD

LCDs are great. They're lightweight and have very sharp screens. I use my Rad-5 for both work and gaming and it works just fine for both. LCDs don't flicker. It's great not to have sore eyes after sitting at the computer for a while.

for the record i go only off of viewable becuase the other measurerments dont really mean crap

ive also seen some displays at compusa with really bad ghosting

is that beucase of the spliter or do lcds have that

LCDs have ghosting if they dont have a good response time. so those LCDs you see must suck. thats why less than 25ms is what you want to prevent ghosting. there are/will be several models with 16ms or 12ms (soon less) response times. thats what i'm holding out for, since gaming is pretty much all i do.

You can also pump up the refresh rate on CRTs.. if you get a good one, you can run it at upwards of 85 refreshes per second (Hz).. your eyes can see about 20, and won't see a difference above 35. 60 is default. If you clunk it down to 50 or below, your going to want to claw out your eyes after a few hours.

It's true that LCD are easier on the eyes. But my CRT is at 1024x768 @ 100hz, that's quite good for my eyes. :)

if you get a good one, you can run it at upwards of 85 refreshes per second (Hz)
85 hz is my prefered refresh rate. Set any higher, and I can't tell any difference. Set any lower, I get headaches and can see flicker on the monitor. Even 75-80 gives me headaches. I can play all day at 85 hz, though.

My LCD runs at 60Hz, and no point going any higher - with an LCD thats not exactly a refresh rate, that is it doesn't blast another electon at it as the previous glow begins fade. I simply decides whether to change to setting for that pixel. Mean refresh rates have to be VERY low before you start noticing it, and at the same time renders high rates basically useless. In fact I think my TFT doesnt support above 75Hz (although it will "slow down" a recieved signal that is too high for compatability purposes).

Another advantage of the and LCD is its size. You can place it at the back of your desk meaning a) more deskspace - I've seen people with keyboards almost falling off their desks cos there's not enough room for them. No more of that. And b) The monitor is further away, which is better for your eyes and posture (having the keyboard a the correct distance from your body is important too).

With a TFT you'll never get magnetic interferance, a big plus if you have big unshielded speakers near your monitor. Uses less power and produces less heat too (don't be fooled if your told the produce NO heat, they do. It's just much less).

On the downside, they are more delicate, and that slightly squidgy TFT surface is a little more difficult to clean (fun to press though!). Make sure you get a quality model too - dead pixels are common, but are reduced to one or none on higher quality units - I only have one, but can't remember where it is nor find it at the mo, that's how much I notice :-) And finally, if your like me, you going to have to find somewhere else to put various papers - top of the monitor ain't gonna be no good for that any more :-P

Going by your initial post: get a good LCD.

I have a cheap 15" I picked up and it is GREAT!
Games pretty well, takes up little room and 0 visible dead pixels :)

Well worth the $$ IMAO.

im looking into getting a 15" benq LCD or a 19" Samsung CRT Model 955DF Black for my girlfriend system im putting together for her bday. i dunno of the 2 to get, i dont mind spending 200+ for a 15" lcd but for that price i can get a good 19". i would like to get a 17" lcd for her but prices for those are out of my league :( do they make CRT monitors close to LCD depths?

I have not seen any CRTs that come even close to LCD depths. With your gf's PC, depending on what she will be using it for I would get a LCD. I have a ViewSonic 15in LCD and love it for my dorm room because i can actually just sit my wireless keyboard out of the way and use my desk for actual paperwork, whereas my roommates keyboard is about to fall off the front of his desk because he has a CRT.

For those who have played on both. Is there really a big difference between the two when playing ganes. I know that people read this stuff and say oh yeah!, get a crt if you play games. But I also talk to people first hand that have used both, and say that they really don't see anything bad, when playing games.

I don't play games an incredible amound, but when doom3 and half life 2 come out, I want to enjoy them. So that's why I'm asking.

What are the main problems with games and LCD's?

The less expensive LCDs can have image latency issues that might be visible when playing fast games or video compared to CRTs.

The better LCDs are just as good albeit at over a grand or two or even three.

Prices are coming down and if you shop hard, you can find a bargin. I'm still looking for a decent 19" myself.
