Having recently purchased a 19" viewsonic monitor my picture when watching DVDs is way better than on my TV. Also, because I am right on top of the monitor the screen has a feeling of being about 20% larger than my 27" screen seen from across the room. Needless to say, I am looking to upgrade my computer sound so that I can get the full effect of DVDs (which I do not have on my stereo anyway).
But before I pull out the credit card, I want to ask if anyone else has the combo of Klipsch 5.1/Terratec DMX 6Fire? I think they work together but from the websites I have seen no definitive answer exists.
Also, I am picking these components based mainly on knowing that they are both good brands. But I know that they are not the only high end manufacturers. I would want to drop $600 on this venture only to find that I missed something obvious. Are there other brands that I should be looking at?

The logitechs have always been good, and these new one's are quite nice, but I have always found Klipsch's to have a more detailed sound.
If you want the extra channel and a little louder sound get the Logitechs. But I still find the Klipsch 5.1's to have a better built/sounding sub, and cleaner speakers.

OK the logitech speakers will cost $38 less. In order to figure out whether I want one or the other, I will have to try to find a local store to see if I can hear both sets side-by-side.

i can tell you this...i listened to klipsh's 4.1's vs logitechs 4.1 and although the sound was "clearer" with the klipsch but the logitechs had a much deeper richer base and were much lowder (that is without loosing sound quality).

1 more thing you may want to consider, the logitechs come with a dolby digital decoder...the klipchs dont and it cost $160 (or so i hear)
I like the Klipsch 5.1s however the Terratec DMX 6Fire 24/96 is a different story. My DMX 6Fire sends a test tone to all of my Klipsch 5.1 speakers but when I play a DVD I don't get sound from the rear or center channels. Terratec support looks to be about as good as Creative Labs support - No support whatsoever. I contacted Terratec support about my problem and I always get some idiot who tells me to turn on Sensura 3D to get my surround to work properly. When I respond that I have already tried that, I get no reply. Not only that, it states in the owners manual that Sensura 3D is for simulated 3D sound with two speakers. Terratec control panel is not that complicated so I don't think I am missing anything there. I have Windows-control Panel-Mulltimedia set to Surround Speakers. Does anybody have any ideas for me? Thanks in advance.
AFAIK, Klipsch 5.1 don't only sound much clearer than the Logitech Z680, they also got about the same bass level. Also, I saw a lot of complaints of Z680 owners about their stability, which seems to be quite nonexistant. Got no first-hand experience, but I read up about the subject.

This is my opinion.
Klipsch speakers have a horn loaded tweeter. Logitech uses a full range cone driver for the highs. That's one advantage. Another is that the subwoofer on the logitechs is renowned for being a "boomy" subwoofer, and not accurate in the bass department. Just read over the klipsch promedia forums. People lambast the logitechs all the time (albeit some are a bit biased, but nontheless worthy of notice).
The Klipsch speakers have no hissing in the lines, like the logitechs do also.
Just my 2 cents.

Please explain to me how the hell speakers would effect computer stability?
The stability of the speakers, e.g. them breakin as soon as you touch them, causing nuclear reactions etc. What speakers usually do.
In other words, Logitech seems to have a lot of RMA'ed Z680's. They just ain't sturdy.

Wait now, so the Logitechs do hiss or they don't?

Hmmmm, this is troubling since I just ordered some last night.
It seems though that not everyone has the hissing problem, just some people.
And every review I've read (4-5) does nothing but praise them, and none have mentioned any hissing.
I will certainly be furious if mine hiss....
