I just spend $65 on an Audigy Gamer and to be perfectly honest I dont hear any real difference compared to my SB Live!
Glad I got the receipt. :D
Personally, i dont notice a difference from my onboard sound to my SB Live! heh

Erm... you would have to be Mozart... Bach, or something to notice any real difference.
Send it back and get the Pine sound card from Newegg... every bit as good as SB live! Just $15.
There's no difference because the new Audigy uses the exact same DSP as the Live! series did, the EMU101K. And that chip is only a slightly modified version of the chip that powered the old AWE32, SB512, etc etc....hell even many cheesy Wal-Mart music keyboards use that same chip.
Audigy is mostly marketing PR.
Well my platinum sounds good and clear.
It's a big difference betweeen Audigy and Live, big difference..

Well If I can't notice the difference then why should I be less $65 when my SB Live! still works fine?
Well, depends on your ears and the speakers you are using.
I noticed the difference the first time booting up. I'm not an expert in these things, but i find the Audigy sound better than the SBLive one.

the audigy has a higher bitrate and higher sample rate output, so on the right equiptment it will sound much better, but that is only when outputing to a reciever and some good HT speakers, for computer speakers you will not tell a difference IMO

Sometimes I like being a bit blind and save a few $100 on graphics card and a little deft and save $75 on a sound card ;)
Well, i always thought my onboard made a good sound, until i bought the SB Live! the sound was so much clearer.
Now in my actual pc i use the Audigy, gives me Firewire and sound in one card saving me one PCI slot. If it hadn't have firewire, i probably would have never bought it. But also here the difference between the SB Live! and the Audigy is hearable, it's not just a technical difference that you can only see in a chart, you can actually hear it. For that you need the right equipment, of course. I've got 5.1 speakers, and never wanna miss them again...;)

I hate the onboard sound it always gives me conflict problems. I wish MB's would come without onboard, it just makes it cost more.
Exactly, i didn't want one, but i had to buy it, cause the board doesn't come without it!

Most motherboards don’t have onboard sound but some have real good sound Gigabytes has SoundBlaster w/6ch and digital outs too. I built one last year GA-7DXR AMD chipset sounded good to me but then again it all sounds good to me, the guy I made it for is a professional DJ and said it sounds real good

I went from my onboard sound on this board, to an Audigy2...and the difference was substatial. I dunno about $110 worth of substatial...but I was feeling particularly uhhh THRIFTY that day. ^_^;
Don't regret it though.

Some motherboards have pretty decent onboard sound. The onboard sound on my K7D Master is pretty dang good compared to the onboard sound on the Shuttle AK31 I had for a while.
It's why I've been so hesitant to spring for the Audigy I've been wanting to match the Creative 5300 speakers I have. I really want 5.1 Dolby Digital for watching movies on my box.
